Introduction

This investigation will be comparing the accessibility of Stantonbury and Milton Keynes theatres to someone in a wheelchair.

My hypothesis is that Milton Keynes will be more accessible than Stantonbury theatre; I chose this hypothesis because Milton Keynes is newer and bigger.  A universal or inclusive building is a building that is open to everyone, a standard design does exclude people, a universal building does not just mean that it has ramps and lifts it means that it is accessible to the person who is the least able, and then it will be accessible to everyone. Barriers of access include things like public transport, books, TV, newspapers and the internet but of course there are exceptions like some books have been published in brail. The fact that Milton Keynes is newer I think is a crucial factor of its accessibility, as described in the scope article times are changing little steps are being made towards accessibility from things like parking to large print menus, this added to by the disabled discrimination act which was introduced in 1995 to ensure that reasonable adjustments are made to make buildings accessible.  By being more accessible companies will gain respect and credibility as well as more custom. As pointed out by scope there are 8.6 million disabled people in the UK and it’s about time this was recognised.

Data collection

I collected my data in several ways first I had primary data.

Linda Harvey

As a class we had a visitor called Linda Harvey. Linda was born disabled and is constricted to a wheelchair. Linda talked to us about many aspects of disability and her experience of it, she then allowed us to voice our queries and she tried to answer them for us. We then wrote about what we had learnt.

I then gathered secondary information.
