In ‘The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night Time’ show how the relationship within the family affects the events and outcome of the story?.
The ‘Curious Incident of the dog in the night time’ by Mark Haddon is a novel which deals with family life. It is set in fairly modern times. The novel revolves around Christopher John Francis Boone who is the narrator and protagonist of the novel; and tells us the story of his search for the killer of Wellington, a neighbour’s dog. In the course of the story Christopher Boone discovers the identity of the killer of the dog but also that his father has lied to him about his mother’s death and that she is really alive. Christopher can not understand the emotions of his family because of his autism. This is trying to be helped at his school by his helper Siobhan. My aim is to show how the relationship within the family affects the events and outcome of the story.
The relationship between Christopher and his father is unstable because of the lies that he has told Christopher about his mum being dead. If he had not have lied then His mum and Dads relationship would have been better. His father cares about Chris but he tries to control him, so Christopher begins not to trust him. “Father banged the steering wheel with his fists …. He shouted, “I said leave it for god sake”. He reacts this way because he does not want him to look into the truth about who killed Wellington, so he is controlling him and telling him what to do. His dad’s feelings about Christopher not looking into it are very strong with him saying “for god sake”. His Dad is also looking out for Christopher and has his best intentions at heart but lies to him about his mum. “Father said that she died of a heart attack” This lie was well intentioned for Christopher so that he does not find out about his mother being alive in London. His dad does not want Christopher finding out because it would ruined there family bond and Christopher would run away.
