A Happy Ending            Lindsay McColl

He screamed, the anger tearing at his heart like a raging tiger chained up in a cage.  He hated them, and everybody.  He held his pillow over his head trying to block it out, but it never did.  He saw his brother tossing and turning with tears rolling down his face. ‘When will they stop? , I can’t take this much longer.’ The shouting grew and grew and grew and then silence.

“What do you think happened?”

“I don’t know, but I’m scared”

“You little wimp, you’re scared of everything!”

Kevin curled back under his covers. He hated mum and dad fighting, but he just didn’t get it. He never saw the way Dad treated her. He never saw her running with fear with tears streaming down her face. I did. Shakily I got out of my bed and crept across the hall to the stairs. As I walked down them I saw the front door lying open. I ran to the door of the living room and there he was, sitting in his chair watching the TV as if nothing has happened. I sat in the chair next to him. I was seething.

“So”

“So what?” he muttered.

“So where is mum? What did you do to her this time?” I screamed.

“Never you mind, you nosy wee runt!”

He was drunk again. He couldn’t handle it. Every night was the same. Mum was even scared to come home from work in case he did anything to her.

“She’s gone…for good this time.”

“I knew this would happen. She doesn’t need you!”

I ran back up-stairs and slammed the door.

“What happened?” Kevin whispered.

“I don’t want to talk about it!”

“Is mum gone?”

“Yes. For good this time!”

I could hear him crying under his covers. I just ignored him and went to sleep.

The next morning my alarm woke me up at 7:30am. I didn’t want to go to school but I know if I dogged another day they would contact my parents. I crawled out of bed and headed towards the bathroom. I got washed and dressed. Kevin was already ready to leave for school. I didn’t know how ...
