The Indian media should understand that in a country like Pakistan which doesn't have a steady government, who doesn't have the resources to keep track on over 200 terrorist groups within its nation. What satisfaction did they get by blaming them? More controversies? Or do they just enjoy the war between these two nations? The job of media is to just convey the event or story, and not create facts or assumptions of their own which the Indian media failed to do. If the Indian media wanted to blame someone, they should blame the Indian government. The terrorists who came by boat could not be detected by the Indian Navy. Instead of handling the problem, all the ministers did for this democratic country was resign from their posts. That didn't help change the mentality of the Indian parties. The two current parties fighting to govern our great nation are the B.J.P and the Congress. Both the parties actually put up posters of the terrorists and people lying in blood to oppose the other party saying, “Is this what you want your next government to be?” Now this is the kind of statements that the media should highlight and bring into the limelight. The media’s job as stated before is to report any and everything that affects the common public. With elections being just near the corner, every party is trying to prove that they are one up on the other. Using an attack on this nation to prove this is something that is inhumanly. The parties, instead of blaming each other should help each other to solve this crisis. This is where the media could help. By creating awareness, they could highlight these actions which will make the politicians realize their mistakes and perhaps, miraculously change the way they think and function.
The media, shockingly still continued to focus on pointless issues like how an Indian producer was allowed to take a tour of the taj and the oberoi, looking at the damage. They further wasted more time in accusing him to be using this tour to make a movie on this tragic day. That is indeed what the country wanted to know, how a producer is planning to make a movie on this day. This piece of news which was reported led to people accusing the Indian government, especially the chief minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh. This accusation led to him resigning from his job. What difference did it make? The damage had already been done, the chaos had already been caused. Yes, although the media’s job is to report news, when there is a crisis at hand, they should only be reporting about the incident and not about who toured the blast sight. On such a day that people have lost loved ones, they would rather see some sensible journalism about how the attack happened and how they managed to get away with it.
Remembering the brave soldiers and officers who gave up their lives to save others, such incidents should have light thrown upon them by the media. The media would still rather blame Pakistan, bring up controversies that arent even relevant and show how inefficient our government is rather than showing the damage caused, what the government and others are doing for us.
To quote a student when asked about their thoughts on the Indian media, “media today is just seen as a mockery of what media was earlier today apart from news you find everything there be it comedy show, or any baba doing yoga” I completely agree with this. What ever has happened to responsible journalism. Nowadays the media seems to focus on only actors and their personal life. How one actor and an actress are in a relationship or how they had such a tragic break up. The media not only is irresponsible but also invades peoples privacy. As long as they get the news they want, they dont care who they hurt. News is often portrayed as entertainment just for it to sell. Even the so called facts that are presented are often twisted and misleading, just to keep the readers or viewers interested. Looking at the media coverage of the controversy about our ex cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, i can safely say that it was the media that hyped everything and over exaggerated the truth to such an extent that even his career got affected. Even tennis player Sania Mirza was in the limelight not for her achievements but for her personal relationship. The media is supposed to respect these sports persons personal lives. Bad publicity can ruin a sports persons career and this has been seen in various cases.
To conclude with, the Indian media has been deteriorating over the years. From the 1993 blasts to the most recent attacks on 26th November, the Indian media has over exaggerated and manipulated news and has been at fault. Always blaming someone is not the easy way out. The media should responsible and should report things as they are and not as they want it to be shown.
