COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE WAY SEAMUS HEANEY AND D. H. LAWRENCE DESCRIBES CHILDHOOD FEELINGS AND MEMORIES

The poems that I’m going to compare and contrast are Mid Term Break and Follower by S. Heaney, and then Piano and Discord in Childhood by D.H. Lawrence.

Seamus Heaney and David H. Lawrence are two poets from extremely different backgrounds, which is the reason their childhood feelings differ so much. Heaney was born in 1939, in the countryside in Ireland, and was the eldest of nine children. Lawrence, however, was born in 1885, in Nottinghamshire. He was the second youngest of five children. Heaney looked up to his father, whereas Lawrence was very close to his mother - Heaney grew up on a farm, and his father was looked up to and respected, as described in Follower. Lawrence’s father was a coal miner, who Lawrence hated since he was a child, but he was very close to his mother, which is reflected in Piano. There was much conflict between his parents, and they lived in poverty in his childhood life.

In terms of education, Heaney went to his village’s school, and then a boarding school, which is reflected in Mid-Term Break. He then studied English at Queens University, and later on became a teacher/lecturer.

Lawrence won a scholarship at Nottingham high school, and then moved on to Nottingham University, where he ended up teaching.

In terms of similarities, the poems I am analysing are all from the poets’ childhoods, Piano and Follower both describe just one parent. Discord in Childhood is about both parents and Mid Term Break is based upon one of his siblings, but also describes the rest ...
