In early act 1 scene 5 the atmosphere is much different to the previous scene because everyone’s getting ready for the Capulet party. All the servants are busy rushing around to make sure everything is perfect. The scene is the total opposite to the last one because scene 5 is full of joy, happiness, with people smiling, there is a hectic mood and loads of chaos where as the last scene is full of sadness, despair and depression. When the servants have finished they all retire behind the scene.
Tybalt reveals the hatred in the scene. He is very fierce. The language he uses is deadly and with some very horrible words. He says “ to strike him dead I hold it not a sin. ”He behaves to his uncle like Romeo is a “villain” and he acts all panicky but Capulet doesn’t mind that Romeo’s at the ball and Capulet’s being polite about it and tells Tybalt to do the same and to calm down, Capulet says “ content thee, gentle coz, let him alone”.
Tybalt reminds me of an uncontrolled maniac. He leaves the room and promises not to start an argument. He has changed the atmosphere from love to hatred because as soon as he sees Romeo he is not happy that a Montague is at a Capulet’s party but no one else seems to be bothered at all apart from Tybalt.
The reaction to Romeo when he sees Juliet is love at first sight his whole mind goes blank about Rosaline, which is a surprise. Juliet is his new girl in his life he thinks she’s beautiful and he wants to kiss her “pilgrim lips”. Romeo shows his love to Juliet through some actions this shows there love is pure and Rosaline’s love was just a crush and infatuation. He feels differently to Juliet than to Rosaline because with Rosaline he was confused and full of sadness but with Juliet its totally different he just can’t believe his eyes. Romeo compares her to jewels.
Romeo and Juliet both spoke to each other for the first time in religious images. Romeo says “This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this”. The two lovers are different from everyone else they are unique. They are both young and love each other within two minutes, which surprises the audience because they are so madly in love and although their families are meant to be enemies but the lovers don’t know that yet. There is a hint of danger and threat to their love due to their families being enemies. They are both shocked that they’re families are enemies and think to themselves that they will make it.
In terms of this scene it is clear that the Capulets and Montague’s are worst enemies. They have a fight in the early scene of act 1 scene 1 and it continues with Tybalt having an outburst at the Capulet party. He gets so angry with Romeo due to being there, he says to Capulet “a villain that is hither come in spite”. He storms out and we are left with suspense.
The scene increases suspense and drama for the future as Tybalt has promised revenge. Tybalt will start another argument after the party is over; Tybalt’s not the sort of person that will just leave it alone. Tybalt will not put up with it he says, “ I’ll not endure him ”. But at the party his uncle warns him to behave in a friendly manner and says, “Show a fair presence, and put off these frowns!”
Romeo didn’t feel like this with Rosaline like he does with Juliet because they use religious language in their sonnet. He says “a pilgrim lips they use in prayer!” he feels totally head of heels in love with Juliet and he only met her for about five minutes.
This scene is more about love because everyone is happy and having a marvellous time especially Romeo and Juliet. Everyone is dressed up and mysterious, discuss the mosk tradition and they all feel welcomed and happy to be there. The only person that is in an angry mood is Tybalt but then Capulet puts him in his place and gets him to leave the party. However Tybalt’s only looking out for his cousin.
