Lennie on the other hand thinks she’s ‘purty’ and really likes her but being Lennie he likes anything playful.
My thoughts of Curley’s wife are that she is a very nice and polite person and almost doesn’t mean to be the person she is made out to be. Also I feel she must feel very alone being the only girl on the ranch but in some ways I feel she does like this because this means she can flirt with the men and almost do whatever she wants. I do feel sorry for her in some ways though because she is very much bossed about by Curley and he doesn’t let her do anything and she is very restricted to what she can and can’t do, Curley gets really angry when he finds out about her flirting with the other men and even confronts the other men almost blaming them for what has happened. The weird thing about this that when she is speaking to the guys in the bunkhouse she asks how Curley hurt his hand and manages to find out that Lennie did it and she was actually happy he did it and he needed someone to face up to him and hurt him in some way.
We can’t really make any real judgments on who Curley’s wife is because we don’t actually know who she is if you like and we don’t find out much about her. We don’t know much about her personal background etc.
Curley’s wife admits something quite bad to Lennie as she told him that she didn’t actually want to get married to Curley and this only happened because she thought her mum stole a letter from a man saying about Curley’s wife being a movie star and being famous.
‘Nother time I met a guy, an’ he was in pitchers. Went out to the Riverside Dance Palace with him. He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural. Soon’s he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write to me about it’ not only is she trying to impress Lennie by this she is telling her story on what she thinks happened. ‘I always thought my ol’lady stole it’ ‘So I married Curley’ She is telling Lennie the truth about what actually happened and Lennie is probable the only person she will tell because I fell there is some trust there and as we know Lennie isn’t exactly the most clever of people with memory loss.
There are many reasons to dislike Curley’s wife because she is a flirt and she is married so this doesn’t go and is very much out of order on Curley also that goes upon the thought that she only married Curley to get away from her mum. She tries to tart herself up trying to get all the boys to like her.
There are also reasons why we should feel sorry for her because she is the only girl on the ranch and this must feel very different having no one to talk to either, I think she tries to find people to talk to but Curley gets to protective and faces up to the people she has been talking to alone. She is very much controlled by everyone and can’t do everything she wants and has no freedom of what she wants to do.
In conclusion I do agree that Curley’s wife deserved her fate because in actually fact she shouldn’t be on the ranch she is only on the ranch because she thought she could make fame and didn’t and blamed her mum and because of this felt she had to leave her mum so just met Curley and married him. So I think she wouldn’t have died if she chose this option of just trying to escape from her mum and it was almost fate that made her die. Also I blame Lennie for what happened because he knew he shouldn’t have been with her on his own and he should have walk away or something.
