She says that Lady Capulet is coming to Juliet's chamber. She then leaves the stage. This also creates dramatic build-up, the audience questions whether Romeo and Juliet will be found out.As Romeo and Juliet say goodbye, their utterances end with many exclamation marks, with Juliet uttering ‘O'. This repetition emphasises the love between Romeo and Juliet. Some grief shops much of love;But much grief shows still some want of wit."Lady Capulet wants to have revenge on Romeo for killing Tybalt. She continuously refers to Romeo as a villain and uses threats against him. She plans to send someone to him and poison him in his food and drink.Lady Capulet: "We will have vengeance for it, fear thou not;Then weeps no more. I'll send one in Mantua,Where that same banished runagate doth live,Shall give him such an unaccustomed dramThat he shall soon keep Tybalt company"This shows that there is much hate for Romeo in the Capulet household apart from Juliet, who she loves. This creates a lot of tension and coldness in the atmosphere. Lady Capulet reveals to Juliet that her wedding with County Paris is arranged next Thursday at St. Peter's church. Lady Capulet says this in a happy way expecting Juliet to be proud and thrilled by the news.Lady Capulet: "Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn,The gallant, young, and noble gentlemen,The County Paris at Saint Peter's church,Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride."Juliet is struck by this news and is not happy but is also worried because she is already married to Romeo and she will therefore become unfaithful if she marries Paris. Again this is dramatic irony. Juliet: "Now by Saint Peter's church and Peter too,He shall not make me there a joyful bride.I wonder at this haste, that I must wed"Juliet is clearly not happy because of her raise in tone and anger about this and refuses to marry Paris. Lady Capulet is surprised by her daughter's reply so she tells Juliet to say it to her father.Lady Capulet: "Here comes your father, tell him so yourself;And see how he will take it at your hands."Lord Capulet enters hears the news of Juliet's refusal. He then thinks that Juliet is ungrateful and not proud about everything that she receives. Lord Capulet: "How, will she none? Doth she not give us thanks?Is she not proud? Doth sh8e not count her blestUnworthy as she is, that we have wroughtSo worthy a gentlemen to be her bride?"Juliet replies and says that she is thankful but not proud showing some respect for he parents. Juliet: "Not proud you have, but thankful that you have;Proud I can never be of what I hate,But thankful even for hate that is meant love."Lord Capulet is outraged and showers Juliet with insults and threats. The mood of the scene turns into conflict and anger. Lord Capulet mocks Juliet saying that she is a minion or worthless girl. He repeats the words ‘thanks' and ‘proud' to show his anger. He tells Juliet to get ready for St. Peter's church regardless and if she doesn't he will drag her on a hurdle (a frame in which prisoners were taken to execution.) to the church.Lord Capulet: "But fettle your fine joints ‘gainst Thursday next,To go with Paris to Saint Peter's churchOr I will drag thee on a hurdle thither."Juliet goes to her knees begging Lord Capulet to listen to her.Juliet: "Good Father, I beseech you on my knees,Hear me with patience but to speak a word."[She kneels down]This shows that Juliet is desperately trying to tell her father what she wants but men didn't really care about women's opinions. Lord Capulet replies with more threats and saying that if Juliet doesn't go to marry Paris next Thursday he will disown her. Lord Capulet: "I tell thee what: get thee to church a'Thursday,Or never after look me in the face.Speak not, reply not, do not answer me!My fingers itch."The words ‘My fingers itch' suggest that he wants to hit Juliet. This shows anger and it creates even more conflict in the scene. Lord Capulet then exits the stage creating relief for Juliet but tension into the atmosphere.Juliet pleads her mother to help her and postpone the marriage to a later date but Lady Capulet refuses and is on her husband's side. She tells Juliet not to speak to her and she is finished with her for now. She exits the stage.Lady Capulet: "Talk not to me, for I'll not speak a word.Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee."Conflict now occurs between the Nurse and Juliet. The Nurse agrees with her parent's opinions. Juliet thought that the Nurse would always support her but she was wrong. The Nurse finishes and exits.Juliet is now by herself. She thinks that the solution is to go to Friar Lawrence. If he cannot solve her problem then she is considering killing herself.Juliet: "I'll to the Friar to know his remedy;If all else fail, myself have power to die."Juliet now knows that she cannot rely on her family any more. Her going to the Friar might mean that she is more optimistic. The audience now see the independent side of her. The scene ends here.Overall this scene affects the audience by starting them with a calm setting and then in an instant turning the setting into a tension-filled, argumentative and controversial one. This sudden change must strike the audience and after the scene ends they want to know what the outcome from the conflict is. The audience then changes their opinions on the characters i.e. the nurse, the audience thought she would always support Juliet but she rejected her and now the audience thinks she is cold because of her abandonment. Act 3 Scene 5 is such a central scene in the play because of all the conflict. At the start of the play it was the Capulets and the Montagues that had the conflict and now in this scene the conflict is within the Capulet family which is breaking them apart. This is a twist and makes it interesting for the audience. This scene also leaves Juliet on her own and creates a little side story between her and the Friar that both families don't know about but the audience do (another case of dramatic irony).The fact that the audience knows more than Lord and Lady Capulet in the scene affects the audience more because it makes it more interesting for them. This might have been a desired effect that Shakespeare has created.I think this a very dramatic scene because of all the conflict and this conflict makes the scene more interesting. Also the fact that it uses dramatic techniques such as dramatic irony makes it a very clever and entertaining scene and so it should be because this is such a central scene in the play. This scene is what makes Romeo and Juliet such a great play.
