As mentioned earlier, the weakening constraints of civilisation is caused by lack of rules, or authority. There is no anarchy around us because there are rules set by people we have voted for, and we try to follow them because we know that we will be penalised if we break the rules. To the children, ‘authority’ is the adults. The adults set the rules, and punish the children if rules are broken. Because there are no adults in the island, the children see this as ‘no rules’ and think that they can do whatever they want to do. Therefore we can say that the adults, or lack of them, are responsible for the weakening constraints of civilisation.
Another thing that leads to the weakening constraints of civilisation is when the plane goes past and the hope of rescues has vanished. Before this, everyone followed rules (well they didn’t really but at least they didn’t kill anybody), because they thought that they would get back into the safety of civilisation. This all changes after the plane goes past, and everyone thinks that there is no hope of getting rescued, and everyone feel that there is no need to follow rules that are from civilisation. Therefore we can say that isolation leads to the weakening constraints of civilisation.
However we must not assume that the adults are responsible for the increase of bloodlust, although they contribute to it. We need another ingredient in the equation for to make the increase of bloodlust, which is a person with an evil intent. This is because bloodlust is something malevolent, and savage, so therefore you need an evil character to lead the group who are confused, into doing evil deeds. Of course, this evil character is Jack. However, Jack is, or was, a nice, if not friendly, boy at the start. And he even liked Ralph, and this is shown in the text where it says “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking”. So we must ask ourselves “what made Jack change”. My answer to that question is the beast, or Lord of the Flies. Lord of the Flies, in the book, is the devil, which is inside the children’s mind and make them commit sins, messing things up (When Simon is talking to Lord of the Flies, he says, “I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are what they are?”). Because Jack is the most savage of them (Jack’s tribe), we can say that the dominance of Lord of the Flies in Jack is much stronger. However we cannot say the Lord of the Flies is responsible for the increase of bloodlust. We must say that the dominance of Lord of the Flies is the cause for the increase for bloodlust. This is because as explained by Lord of the Flies, he is a part of everyone (which means that everyone has a bit of a devil inside them).
We have looked at how weakening constraints of civilisation has contributed to the increase of savagery on the island. And by looking at what leads to the weakening constraints of civilisation, I have come to a conclusion that 3 things are responsible for, or at least contributes to the increase of bloodlust on the island. They are the adults, or lack of them, the isolation, and ultimately the devil, which is the Lord of the Flies.
