Hello, today I am going to speak about Diwali,

Diwali is a festival of joy, splendor, brightness and happiness. It is the festival of lights and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by all Indians all over the world.

Diwali is probably the most well-known of the Indian festivals. It is a 5 day celebration which occurs on the 15 day of the Hindu month of Kartika (during October/November). The word Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps".

There is a long book about the historical background but I will give you the summary:  after fourteen years of exile in the forest, Ram, and his brother returned to their hometown having fought a battle with the demon king who had captured Ram's wife, Sita. Helped by an army of monkeys, Ram and his brother defeated the demon king and rescued Sita. When Ram returned to his hometown the people lit lamps to welcome him back. Delighted at Queen Sita's rescue and the safe return of King Ram, the people danced and celebrated and lit fireworks to show how happy they were. These festivities continue every year at Diwali and are still celebrated today. This year Diwali is on the 17th October.

There are 5 days to the festival and people celebrate them with true understanding.
