Does Shylock Get Everything He Deserves?

This essay is discusses the character Shylock and whether or not

he got what he deserved. I think that Shylock got more than he deserved. He was treated unfairly by the Christian jury who punished him severely. Shylock was defeated of his bond, robbed of his ducats and was deserted by his one and only daughter Jessica. He was even compelled to give up his birthright, his Jewish religion and become one of the Christians whom he so much hates. Throughout the play Shakespeare’s character Shylock develops a more genuine human dimension, in the same way as the Christians fall far short of perfection. The result is a character that indeed suffers a lot of wrongs who has a valid point of view on Christian fallings. Overall it seems that Shylock had been biasedly

punished and does not deserve his entire fate

Shylock first appears in Act1 sc3. A very hostile Shylock is in Venice when Antonio and Bassanio come to him for a loan. Antonio is a Christian and is against the idea of making a profit from money lending because Christians were not allowed to practice usury. So Jewish money lenders both filled a need and often became rich and unpopular, hence Shylock. Regardless of this Antonio still comes to Shylock to borrow a large sum of money. Shylock takes this into consideration and is at first reluctant to consider lending the money to Antonio. Shylock also takes into account Antonio’s past insults towards him and recounts

“ In the Rialto you have rated me you call me misbeliever cut throat dog and spat upon my Jewish Gabardine”

Shylock expresses their past encounters and Antonio’s insulting behavior towards him. To an extent Shylock justifies his hostility and because of this we are able to sympathize with him. It is clear that the Jewish and Christian religion have their differences there is a sense of inequality between these religions.

During this time the Jewish religion was very unpopular according to the Christians this made the fact that Shylock was a Jew and moneylender worst for him. This made it harder for him to make companionships within the Venicean society and made him a victim.

Shylock’s generous side is shown here as he still agrees to lend

Antonio the three thousand ducats. He asked for an unusual bond and forfeit, which he is entitled to do.

“If you repay me not such a day, be nominated for an equal pound of flesh be cut off in what part of your body pleaseath me.”

This implies that Shylock has a hidden agenda. This makes the reader think that Shylock posseses inhumane qualities. as he is asking for part of human flesh that he would please him to cut of.
