  1. How does Shakespeare present the contrasting characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in Act 2 Scenes 1 and 2

    Start of this play, the themes mainly about murders and how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth changed. Section 1 Throughout Act 1 Scene 3, Macbeth was delighted when he heard the three witch's prediction of his future, 'Stay, you imperfect speakers. Tell me more', this quote demonstrates that he wants to know more about his future and he is keen to find out what great things will lie ahead of him. Furthermore, he called the three witches 'imperfect speakers', this might due to the fact that he does not really know what they are as he might not seen them before.

    This award was made "for the works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth with exalt everyday miracles of the living past." I believe Heaney deserved this award not only because he is an outstanding poet but also because he questions the reader with his use of words with an energy and passion. Moreover, he uses many of his poems to analyse his past experiences, in order to see how they have affected him as a person; this allows the reader to learn from his encounters and adapt it to their own lives.

    However during the 1960s the government invoked apartheid and declared District 6 a whites-only area. Then years after the apartheid was ended, he returns to District 6 where although the segregation has officially ended there is still racism going on, and this is his response to that. The three poems cover some pretty polar subjects but they are linked in the ways that they represent certain emotions especially conflict, inequality and difference. One of the ways that these emotions are represented in the poems is through the differences they portray.

    Songs of Innocence and Experience was written in 1790. The main theme Blake stressed was that a child remains innocent in his or her youth. The songs of Innocence are written in a child's point of view. They still strive strong even though there is evil around them. Blake felt as you grew older you lost that innocence as you gained more experience. The songs of Experience are written in an experienced point of view, which had realised the true evil around him or her and hated it.

    Firstly we see how 'Digging' has both a metaphorical and literal meaning to it. The literal meaning is that his father and grandfather are farmers, the poem talks about his family 'Digging' and working on the farm. Onwards from this the metaphorical meaning is that Seamus Heaney himself is 'Digging' into his past and background, which indeed is farming. Hence the title is rather effective. 'Digging' is about Heaney breaking away from the family tradition and becoming a poet thus it is written in an untraditional way. In 'Digging' Heaney begins his poem in the present tense he is describing what he is doing and his surroundings at the time of writing before he

    The first factories appeared in 1740, concentrating on textile production. From this point on advances in technology happened very quickly; steam engines, railroads and machinery transformed the lives of people in Britain. This meant that there was mass migration to the cities where wok could be found. Consequently housing became overcrowded and living conditions very poor. Cities gradually expanded to cope with their growing population and took over the surrounding countryside. The 18th century was a time of much social change and political unrest at home and abroad.

Afrika turned down the chance to be classed as white, and chose instead to become a Muslim and classified as coloured. I think that Afrika did a very noble thing sticking to his religion even though he knew he would be a subject of discrimination. 'Nothing's Changed' sets the scene by describing District Six as a rundown area and not very well looked after, by writing '...seeding grasses trust bearded seeds into trouser cuffs, cans trodden on...' and if you picture it in your mind it sounds and looks like a wasteland.

  11. Each of the six poems has a different approach towards death. Just as people do, each one of us beholds a different emotion

    The idea dwells on the subject of memory and whether to remember a person after their death or not. The poem starts with ?remember me when I?m gone away, gone far away into the silent land;? the persona here wants to be remembered after her death. Her use of euphemism in ?gone away?, softens the meaning of how cruel death can be and also signifies how alerting and irritating the subject of death is to her. Rossetti described after life metaphorically in ?the silent land?. As it gives a more effective and touching meaning, portraying how calm and peaceful afterlife is, which she uses to make it more tolerable for her partner to cope with her departure.

  • Compare two poems from other cultures

    "Conclusion The "Hurricane hits England" is mainly talking about a woman travelling by boat to England from British Guiana. The hurricane that woman witnessed was very violent and destructive, yet it has created something positive inside the woman and given her hope of being accepted in her new homeland. She finds the hurricane liberating as well as disturbing: she "rides the mystery" of the storm, and feels that a "frozen lake" inside her is being broken up. The author is very effective in explaining how worried she is moving to a completely strange country. The "Half-Caste" poem talks about what does half-caste mean? John Agard tries to get the point across that half-castes are perceived as half a person, but later in the poem the author says they are in fact a whole person. The poem relies on comparisons to make us see how wrong it is to judge things that are in contrasting colours as only "half" worthy. He uses examples of great and famous artists like Picasso and Tchaikovsky. The author is effective in describing that half-castes are not "half a person" and how he dislikes the phrase half-caste."

    "I think that women can relate to both of these poems, and the poets achieve this in different ways. They cover the themes of life, excitement, evolution, new starts, mystery, confrontations; relationships and the struggle that comes with love which many women experience when pregnant. Consequently, 'You're,' relates to the baby being in the womb and the anticipation of the birth, which I think is the most effective theme in this poem. To sum up, 'Catrin,' I would say that to make relationships work you need to work at them and with all kinds of love, there comes difficulties. These poems may seem very similar on the surface, but if you look in more detail, they have many differences."
