Global Warming: exaggerated hoax or terrifying threat?

In this essay I will discuss the advantages, disadvantages and whether or not global warming is exaggerated by the media and many different scientists. Global warming is the rise in temperature of the Earths atmosphere.

The truth behind global warming is that the Earth is naturally warmed by rays from the sun which pass through the Earths atmosphere and are reflected back into space again. The atmosphere is made up of layers of gas, some of which are called ‘greenhouse gases’. They are mostly natural and make up a kind of ‘thermal blanket’ over the Earth. This layer lets some of the rays back out of the atmosphere keeping the earth at the right temperature for humans, animals and plants to survive. Global warming is good because it keeps the Earth from getting too cold and forming another ‘ice age’, but if too much ‘greenhouse gases’ are made the thermal blanket gets thicker and too much heat is kept in the Earth’s atmosphere. 0.04% of the Earth’s atmosphere is carbon dioxide which is not a lot. Nitrogen takes up 78% of the Earths atmosphere, which is a huge amount compared to the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

So how can a gas which makes up such a small percentage of the Earth’s atmosphere harm us? We survive on that small amount because without carbon dioxide in the atmosphere we would not live. People like Steve Boler () say ‘Reducing CO2 to slightly less than half of current concentrations would kill off all green plant life. As concentrations increase, so do plant growth rates and harvests, and many greenhouses and conservatories add CO2 to the air to quickly grow healthy and productive plants. Yet, we are told this trace gas is pollution.’ This shows that if the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is reduced we would die, since plants produce the oxygen we breathe in. We are told that too much carbon dioxide in the air causes global warming and that we should be concerned about it but how is that possible if there is only 0.04% in the Earth’s entire atmosphere.

In The Austrailian July 18, scientist David Evans, a former global warming alarmist, addmited that evidence is shaky on how carbon effects global warming. In fact, Evans wrote, the current global warming trend ended in 2001. He cited ice core data from six previous global warming cycles over the last five hundred thousand years. The data revealed that temperatures rose eight hundred years before any significant increases occured in atmospheric carbon levels.

However, it is possible that global warming is happening. There are changes in the Earth’s enviroment that prove to us that global warmining is acting upon this Earth ...
