"Vendetta" by Guy de Maupassant.

Question.

Guy de Maupassant is regarded as "one of the greatest masters of the short story in world literature". How does your reading of his work "Vendetta" support this?

I think that Guy de Maupassant is "one of the greatest masters of the short story in world literature". He was born in 1850 and died in 1893. He has written more than two hundred stories in thirteen years. I will be writing about the structure, narrative voice the scene and the characters. I will also write about the tension and the turning point. I am going to be writing about one of his stories "Vendetta".

"Vendetta" is a good example of a short story. Short stories were popular in the nineteenth century because when people wanted to pass time one person from the family would read. At the end of the nineteenth century people could read and write. Short stories were very popular around this time.

In the story there is a widow called Mrs Saverini and she lived with her son in a small mean house on the ramparts of Bonifacio, on the coast of Sardinia. They had a dog called Semillante and her son was called Antoine. Antoine has an argument with someone called Nicholas Ravolati. Nicholas stabs Antoine and runs away to Sardinia that night. His mum promises the "Vendetta". She has an idea. She starves the dog for three days, makes a dummy and puts some black pudding around his neck. She continued to do this for a few months and got him into a routine that when he saw the dummy he went for his neck after this she rewarded him with some black pudding. She dressed up as an old beggar man and went to do the "Vendetta".

All stories follow a traditional five part structure "Vendetta" is no exception. The first part of the structure is called the exposition. This is when the background is described and the characters are introduced. The second part is the development. This is usually the longest part of the story and it builds up tension. Part three is the complication. This is when a problem occurs. Next is the climax. This is the most exciting part of the story happens. Then the story ends with the resolution and everything is solved.
