How does J.B Priestly Demonstrate the importance of collective responsibility in an ‘Inspectors Calls

The story ‘an inspector calls’ is by J.B Priestly it is set in 1912 two years before the first world war the play was written in 1945 just after the second world war the play is set in the fictional town of Brumly were the Birlings live who at the start are celebrating in ‘a self satisfying way’ about the the engagement of Gerald and Shelia. The Birlings are wealthy the story is all about a girl who has just commited suicide called Eva Smith everything at the Birlings house has a responsibility for her death.

At the start there is a dining room table with 5 people sat around it Arthur and his wife Mrs Birling and their two children Eric and Shelia and her Fiancee Gerald At the end of the dinner Mrs Birling and shelia leave while the men have their cigars and port and Arthur gives the two younger ones some advice on life and how to look after themselves ‘forget the community and all that nonsense’.

Then Edna arrives and and announces that there is an inspector Goole wanting to talk to Mr Birling about a girl he explained that he was here because a girl had gone into the hospital after swallowing dissinfectant and that she had done this herself the inspector then calls him over and shows arthur a picture of eva both Gerald and eric try to get a look but the inspector shields the photo away so he can deal with one Person at time Arthur regonises the picture as soon as he sees her she worked at arthurs factory but he sacked her 18 months ago.

The inspector then asked why she was sacked it was after the holidays and all the women wanted a raise from 22 s but they wanted 25 s Mr Birling refused and they all went on strike but soon they were running low on money so all asked for there job mr Birling allowed them to comeback but they werent allowed a raise there were a few ringleaders and sacked them Eva was one of them. Mr Bilrling doesent understand how he is responsible for the death of eva Smith. The inspector explains she died because ‘of a chain of ...
