How does J.B Priestly Demonstrate the importance of collective responsibility in an 'Inspectors Calls

The inspector then asked why she was sacked it was after the holidays and all the women wanted a raise from 22 s but they wanted 25 s Mr Birling refused and they all went on strike but soon they were running low on money so all asked for there job mr Birling allowed them to comeback but they werent allowed a raise there were a few ringleaders and sacked them Eva was one of them. Mr Bilrling doesent understand how he is responsible for the death of eva Smith. The inspector explains she died because ‘of a chain of events, she had been turned down too many times’. Arthur then asks what happens to her next ‘did she go on the streets’ he knows girls with no reference and a history of trouble will find it hard to get a job.

Shelia then enters the room and asks what is going explains to Shelia about a young girl died two hours ago she is quite shocked about it and asks what happened to her next well she had a stroke of good luck she got herself a job in a clothes store called Milwards 3 months after she was sacked from Birling and co but was then sacked after a complaint after only 1 month of being at the store shelia looks guilty and asks to see the picture of her and starts to cry and runs off, on her return the inspector asks how she knew Shelia she went with her mother to Milwards she picked up this one dress and her mother tells her it will look awfull in that dress but she wanted to try it on so eva put it up to herself and suited it really but when she tried it on her mum was right she looked terrible, she sees Eva in the mirror smiling as if to say ‘dosent she look terrible in that’ shelia was mad and said to the boos of the store that if Eva isint sacked ten her and her mum will close their accounts at the store this would be a big blow as the birlings were a big name and had large accounts so Eva had to go and she was sacked for the second time in four months.

Shelias guilts makes her ask the inspector what happens he replys ‘she didn’t have a steady job afterwards and changed her name to Daisy Renton’ at this point there is a look of shock on geralds face and pours himself a drink at first he denies ever knowing her but its quite obvious he did then the inspector asks him then he admits knowing her he tells them how they met ‘ it was march 1911 and I was at the palace variety thaetre I thought she looked pretty and he could see that she was being coresed by Joe Maggorty a half dunk and gogle eyed man he had a reputation for being a wominiser’ he claims to have ‘rescued’ her gerald the took to morgan terrace who was owned by a friend who was away in Canada for a couple of weeks she ended up a mistress of Geralds but by September gerald had to go away on buisness and the relationship would never have worked as they were from different classes.

Gerald then asks if he can leave as he has not seen Daisy since september and he wants some fresh air, the inspector believes him and lets him go. The inspector then turns to Mrs birling saying she only saw him two weeks ago.

The inspector makes her admit that Eva had come to the womans charity in Brumly which Mrs Birling was head of for some help she called herself mrs birling she claimed to be married but he abonded her, Mrs birling didn’t believe any of it and then she forced the truth out of her that a young man had got her pregnant but were not in love so did not marry he had given her money which had been stolen Mrs birling did not believe her second story so she refuses her any money and her uses her power to stop others from giving her any money she told her that it is the dads responsebility to look after the child and he ‘should be severly dealt with’ they all then realise who the father is and when Eric walks in the room he does not deny any thing concerning his relationship with Eva he tells of the time he first met her for the first time ‘I was bit drunk at the palace bar in november 1911 and slept with her that night and a few more times when I found out she was pregnant I stole 50 pounds but when she found out it was stolen she ended the relationship.

When gerald arrives he tells them there is no inspector goole and there was no suicide at the hospital so Arthur, shelia and gerald all breathe a sigh of relief that there will be no public shame bought to the family while shelia and eric still feel the guilt and are trying to come to terms with their responsibility  arthur in particulaur is happy because he may be on the way to receive a knighthood, But then they receive a phone call from brumley police station that an inspector will be coming round to question them on the suicide of a young girl.

J.b Priestly has shown collective responsibility towards other people ‘we are members of one body we are responsible for each other I tell you that I tell you that soon the time will come when, if men will not learn that lesson then they will be taught in fire blood and anguish’. J.B Priestly was a socialist in 1940 he broadcasted on the radio he told the listners ‘one must stop thinking of property and power and and think more of the community and creativity’. I think that the inspector was sent to make the family accept their collective responsbility for the death of eva smith.
