How does Shakespeare’s imagery help us to understand the thoughts and feelings of the characters?

        

Shakespeare’s use of imagery in Romeo and Juliet, really helps us to get to know the characters. With this imagery we can get a look into the depth of thoughts and feeling that the characters experience throughout the play. feelings such as joy, ecstasy, distress and grief are expressed by both characters at different intervals in the play

 Firstly is the first , meeting between Romeo and Juliet, which is found at Act1, Scene 5. At this meeting Romeo has been taken aback by the beauty of Juliet. He shows us this by the range of images in his speech.

        “O she doth teach the stars to burn bright.”

        Romeo has given us the image that Juliet is much more bright than anything else and that she is the source of the light at the party, so she is giving light to every thing else. Romeo is falling in love with her already and it is true love. And as a result Juliet has instantly made him forget about Rosaline by her essence and beauty.

        Romeo then continues on the same theme that Juliet is beautiful and bright, and that she stands out over anything else.

                “It seems she hangs upon the check of night,

                 As a jewel is on an Ethiop’s ear.”

This refers to Juliet as being a bright jewel on the ear of an Ethiopian which again which is yet again showing the contrast between light and dark by describing Juliet as being bright. He is constantly emphasising this. The rest of the speech by Romeo is still playing upon the image of Juliet being bright and possessing beauty which is above ...
