“…I entered; but I had hardly placed
my foot within the door, before the
children shrieked, one of the women fainted.
The whole village was roused; some fled,
Some attacked me, until, grievously bruised
By stones and many other kids of missile
Weapons, I escaped…”
Humans in the creature’s mind were “barbarous”, they did not even try to comprehend his heart and started to bully him simply because of his horrible features. Even more, his creator, thought that “the beauty of the dream vanished”, when he made an unpleasant looking monster. As it is described in the book, “yellow skin…watery eyes…black lips”. These words surely made the horror of the monster stand our, and the narrator, Victor, had already damaged the images of the monster in the readers’ mind.
The DeLacey family rejected the creature too. The creature did so many “kind” things for them.
“Collected my own food and fuel for
the cottage…cleared their path from
the snow …when they were unhappy,
I felt depressed; when they rejoiced, I
sympathised in their joys.”
This shows that he actually desires to be their friend, and he has positive emotions towards them. But this family did not even show any understanding for his shameful face. They are glad when they did not know a huge, ugly creature was helping them; but afterwards when they saw the creature was in their house, they did not even think about it, the word “spirit, wonderful” had all gone, the son of the blind man in the DeLacey family even beats him up, “… he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick.”
I think it is very unjust, because the creature is being kind to them and looking forward to being friends with them as well. The creature did many things to help them but they just judge the creature depending on his looks. The blind father in this family try to be friend with him, but when his son came back, they just damage it.
The creature begins to hate his creator, Victor and tries to kill people who surround him. He is not exactly selfish, he just wants to show him his feelings, so kills them and makes Victor feel lonely, the same as himself.
Deep inside him, he felt isolated and “bewildered”. He said “I was oppressed by fatigue and hunger and far too unhappy to enjoy the gentle breezes of evening…” he wishes to have friendship and love, so he threatens Victor to create a female for him, which can “interchange those sympathies” He knows that what love is and many people he knows has been love. He does not want to be lonely anymore.
At the end of the story, Victor Frankenstein tries to kill the creature and followed him to Northpole, but there it was freezing and it was hard for him to survive, so he died, the creature feels sorry for what he did and shows that he likes Victor. “I am satisfied,” the creature said.
I think the writer, Mary Shelley was very successful in making readers feel sympathetic to the creature, she used very powerful expressions such as “…who formed me, and sent me forth to this unsupportable misery.” We see his point of view and I think this is really effective to make me feel sorry for the creature. She also begins and ends this novel with Walton’s letters to his sister, which can make people feel it is more realistic and sorry to the creature. The reason why May wrote this novel is actually because in the century which she wrote “Frankenstein”, science was essential and she tried to change the world by writing this story to prove and make people feel that science is not perfect.
