How has Baz Luhrmann re – presented ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to appeal to a modern teenage audience?

‘Romeo and Juliet’ is well known play that was written by Shakespeare in 1596 and then it was re made into a film over four hundred yeas later by Baz Luhrmann in 1996. The director made the classic ‘Romeo and Juliet’ into a fast moving action film, cutting over two thirds of the original text, but although it is set in modern times, it is still the same timeless story of the "star crossed lovers".

At the beginning of the film, there is a very fast sequence of camera shots, the director have done this to show the audience that the film is going to be a fast moving, action film, with lots of drama. Baz Luhrmann also uses various camera shots and movements. He uses swift changes of shots in the opening to fit into an action genre, he also use Point Of View shots to show the phrase / feelings of a character e.g. when Romeo takes the drugs before going to the Capulet ball. Luhrmann uses Point Of View shots to show the effects of the drugs. Sometimes he makes things happen slow or fast. When he makes lady Capulet move faster than a normal human, Luhrmann does these things so that the audience will think that she is a cartoon character. He also makes things go slow, like when he shows Verona Beach in slow motion. By doing this he’s telling the audience that the city is sleazy and corrupt. Example of another camera shot is when Romeo kills Tybalt, the director also uses a crane shot to show the viewers that he’s small and helpless. Extreme close ups are used to show a characters feelings. After Tybalt’s death the camera closes in on Romeo’s face to show his anger and horror. All these camera shots and movements make the film more visually exciting. This can also help the viewers to comprehend the characters motivation.

The different types of music that the director uses are; operatic, rock, western, echoing theme, classical, 70’s disco, love song, pop, gospel choir and religious chant. Each kind of music he uses describes the characters or the situation. E.g. Luhrmann used operatic music at the beginning of the film, this adds drama and passion, he uses rock music to describe the Montague boys which adds a sense that they are ...
