How is the theme marriage presented in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice? You should also include the reasons for people marrying and show knowledge of historical context.    

The novel pride and prejudice is approximately set in the 1789. Jane Austen presents herself to me as a social reformer in her novel or even a comedy writer. I say this because she adds humor to show how bad marriage was in her times and how it was used for the wrong reason, but it wasn’t only marriage that she found a problem with.

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife,’

In this opening sentence Jane Austen described a man’s wife as a possession. Jane Austen being a social reformer may have wanted show readers this and so maybe this word possession would turn into love in the future. This also says that the rich did not marry for love, but for something else.

Marriage in Jane Austen’s society is very important. Marriage is the status all the women live to achieve. Money and looks are important for a good marriage. If a woman never got married, because she was poor or had bad looks, she would go and live with a married sister or brother. Marriage was mainly to advance in a social position.
