I want to argue that the minor character of Miss Havisham is far more superior to the poorly detailed protagonist Pip

Quite clearly Dickens writes best about Pip, discuss.

Notwithstanding the views of some, I want to argue that the minor

character of Miss Havisham is far more superior to the poorly detailed

protagonist Pip in Dickens’ novel, Great Expectations.  Dickens uses a

plethora of techniques to illustrate this.  Miss Havisham is not only a far

more complex, complicated character but is also the one who controls

what happens to Pip and the way he is towards Estelle.  Miss Havisham

manages to control Pip by lying and deceiving him to make him believe

that she is giving him money, or will do in the near future.  Miss Havisham

is a sinister, evil and twisted character and this is but one of the reasons for

her superiority towards Pip.  I could end my argument now but to

make my point more clear I shall continue.

From my introduction, I am sure you will see that Miss Havisham is

the superior character through out the whole of the novel up until her

tragic death.  Through the novel, Miss Havisham manages to control Pip by

making gestures to suggest that she maybe the one whom is paying Pip.  

But whilst doing so she also tries to control how Pips life will turn out

with Estelle by saying things such as,” Well Pip, what do you think of

Estelle?”  When Miss Havisham says this it is in front of Estelle so that it

would be clear whether he liked Estelle or not and if not then maybe Miss

Havisham would have probably left him alone, but because Pip liked

Estelle, Miss Havisham knew she would have a chance to ruin a mans life

just as a man ruined her life.  Miss Havisham is a very sly and cunning

character as she proves by making Pip play in the garden everyday to try

and make him fall in love with Estelle as she is a very attractive young
