Introduction

In an Inspector calls how has Priestly shown the role of Inspector Goole? How effective is his character? The play an Inspector calls is set in the spring of 1912. The setting of this play is an industrial city in the north midlands called Brumley. At the beginning of the play the Birling family are celebrating Sheila's marriage to Gerald Croft. The characters in the play are Arthur Birling, his wife Sybil Birling, their children Sheila and Eric, Sheila's fianc Gerald and Edna the maid. But they're about to receive a rude interruption. Conclusion

When the Inspector arrives the mood changes dramatically. Mr B starts to get very annoyed and impatient, "I don't like that tone". When the inspector leaves Mr B is back to his normal self again. When Goole leaves Sheila and Eric have changed they understand what they have done. There not bothered by the fact it was all fake they feel bad about treating Eva so badly. Gerald and Mrs B aren't really bothered like Mr B they are just relived that their public appearances aren't ruined. I think that the role of the Inspector is to make the Birling family realise how cruel they have been. They treat the lower class with no respect whatsoever. They think that they are better people but their not. The role Inspector was effective, it made them realise how cruel they had been toEva Smith. ...read more.
