It was a stormy day in Kampa level B-14. The Kougar team were preparing for their first mission with the new recruits. Gavin was the founder of Kougar, he was 27 and had been with Kougar for two years. In his time with the rebel group he had destroyed numerous security robots and killed numerous people. He had nothing against these people; they were simply in the way. The aim of Kougar in the long run was to have a democratic system in Toblia. They lived in Kampa, which was a city in Toblia, which was a country in the continent of Tobliamenton. They were probably not going about their views in the most peaceful way but nothing else had worked. Gavin was trying to prepare the team for one of their most dangerous missions yet, although the team didn’t realise what the mission was at present. Kougar were to destroy the Malik robot factory. Malik was a big Andro-Technics company that produced robots for most of the aristocracy in Tobliamenton. Gavin had come to the conclusion that if they caused a stir in the aristocracy that they could put the president under such stress that he would retire. This would be where Kougar moved in, they could put forth the idea of a democratic system! This was to no avail yet, however. Despite Gavin’s numerous attempts he was getting the same results, nothing.

The rest of the team were Jed, Swift, Gamma and Rox.

The team had asked for recruitments recently and were well rewarded with several people. Some of them had quitted early because they couldn’t handle the pressure of the initiation training. The two who were left were a nervous looking girl, Rox, and a good fighter, Swift.

Jed and was dark haired and tall with a reasonable and fair attitude. He was twenty-five. The girls, Gamma and Rox were also very different. Gamma was another blond. She was twenty-three but with no sense of responsibility. She had a very wide knowledge of guns and was quite good at making up strategies at short notice. She had joined Kougar after she found out about it through word in the underground gangster community. She had grown up surrounded by gangsters and was good at dangerous negotiations. A good friend who knew that she was looking for money had told her about Kougar. She had signed up with Kougar immediately and if asked she would tell you she had never regretted that decision. Rox was the latest recruit; she was the prettier of the girls. She was quite shy and didn’t like being in the spotlight,. She preferred communicating to audiences through writing and had a brilliant mind although not many people in the group had really noticed. She was the youngest at nineteen.

Swift was also a new addition and had an extensive knowledge of explosives, hand-to-hand weapons, and blending in with a community. He was another quiet one but when angry you wanted to be on his team, not against him. Gavin couldn’t see why Swift had wanted to join in the first place; he didn’t seem to be incredibly enthusiastic about the job. Maybe he was just here for the money.

Jed was an old friend of Gavin’s; he had joined as soon as Kougar had been thought up. Gavin had convinced Jed to join pretty easily as they had known each other since college and had been partners ever since.

They made their way toward the train but before they got on Gavin stopped them all.

‘You guys and girls won’t know what the mission today is apart from the fact that it will take place in Kampa level D-4. This is gonna be a big mission, probably our biggest to date.’ He paused; the sound of a train starting in the next platform was too loud to talk over. Plus he wanted to add effect.

‘Well?’ Jed asked

‘We’re gonna take down the Malik robot factory.’ Gavin finished. There were some gasps and he waited for the murmurs to stop.

‘Malik! They’re big! They supply loadsa robots to people.’ Came Gamma’s voice.

‘Yeah, Why d’you think we’re takin’ it down?’ Jed asked.

‘Now, this will be a big mission and I want full co-operation from all members,’ Gavin said, as the murmurs finished, ‘we’re supposed to wait here for some weapons and then we’ll get onto a train. I better explain the mission details now in case there’s no time later.’ The crew nodded.

‘Whadda we do?’ Asked Jed.

‘I want you two guys - that is Jed and Rox - to secure an exit. Swift and me can take care of the bomb settings. You know how to set bombs right Swift?’ Swift nodded silently. Gavin felt irritated, surely Swift didn’t know how to set every bomb. There are lots of different types and all set differently. Gavin didn’t like people who boasted, especially if they were telling the truth. Most people will tell you that this is a fault on Gavin’s part but he’d deny it.

There was a cold silence while Gavin thought hard; he liked pointing out faults but hadn’t been able to with Swift… Yet.

‘Gamma, you’re gonna cover me an’ Swift until we get to the bomb. It could be pretty dangerous in there. Once we reach it, you make your way up to the top again. I’ll go next and Swift can follow me once the bomb’s set. He should be okay.’

‘Okay boss!’ Gamma said, cheerily. The thought that she was assisting a mission that would undoubtedly result in multiple deaths seemed to have no effect on her conscience.

‘Everyone know what they’re doin’ then?’ Gavin questioned.

        ‘Yep!’ Gamma said.

        ‘Yeah…’ Rox said quietly.

‘Just say the word!’ Jed laughed, patting Gavin on the back.

‘The word!’ Gamma said. She thought she was funny and even thought other people shared her frame of mind. They didn’t of course.

‘I think I know what I’m doin’ here.’ Swift answered, coldly. ‘I follow you, Gavin. Then I get to set a highly dangerous bomb while everyone else runs to the safety of the surface, leaving me to chase them. Basically risking my life because I’m new, you don’t know me, don’t like me and think I’m expendable. Have I covered everything?’

‘Don’t look at it like that, Swift.’ Gamma said. I’d set the bomb but you’ve got a better knowledge of them than me. Please don’t think Gavin’s doing this ‘cos he doesn’t like you. He wants this mission to be a success, that’s all. There’s more chance of you setting the bomb correctly than any of the rest of us.’ Gamma suddenly realised she’d said that wrong. ‘Not that I think that there’s a chance you’ll mess up Swift!’

‘You’ve said enough.’ Swift answered. ‘As long as I get my money after this then I don’t care what I do.’

‘We’ll worry about that later.’ Gavin said. ‘The guns are here.’

A massive cart covered with a tarpaulin appeared from the end of the platform.

‘Isn’t it a little dangerous to sort it out here?’ Rox questioned.

‘We won’t get ‘em here.’ Gamma said, as if Rox was brain-dead. ‘We’ll go over there.’ She pointed to a small, metal cabin on the other end of the platform. The door was falling off and it was almost totally covered in rust.

‘We can’t all fit in there.’ Rox said, liking Gamma less and less.

‘No, we put the cart in there and then we file in, take a gun and back out again. Hide the gun though.’ Gamma told her, she sounded a little more reasonable now.

‘Ok.’ Swift said. ‘Who’s gonna go in first?’

‘Me always.’ Gamma said. ‘I’m the gun expert.’

‘Yeah, you better hurry up Gam.’ Said Gavin. ‘Train leaves in about seven minutes.’ Gamma walked towards it slowly and inconspicuously. She stood next to it, leaning on it and then wandered in casually. She emerged a few seconds later, with a blank expression on her face.

‘You next, Jed.’ Gavin said. Jed copied everything Gamma did, not quite as furtively, however. He reappeared, only just hiding a semi-automatic gun in his belt.

‘It's your turn, Rox. Then you Swift.’ Gavin said. He said Swift with a slight hint of disdain. Swift looked up and shot Gavin a look of pure evil. Rox walked toward the shed, trembling. She was terrified; she had thought that this squad would be a resistance of the oppressive presidential forces. They were -in reality brash- gun-slinging maniacs and she didn't trust them as far as she could throw them, which wasn’t very far.

‘Why didn’t I become a lawyer like mummy said I should?’ She whispered to herself. A few minutes later she reappeared, there was no sign of a gun, must have been a small one or she had hid it well.

It was Swift’s turn. He approached the hut and-as he had seen the others do-waited next to it for a second. He entered cautiously and took two guns from the cart: A Hunting Rifle and Magnum .45. He also took extra rounds of bullets and some grenades. He suddenly noticed something in the bottom of the cart. A small glint of metal! He burrowed through until he picked out a sword with a strange symbol on the bottom. It had a red ruby on the handle and small letters inscribed on the blade, must have been in a foreign language. It read: ‘Apkhncvughncf hqhnc fuqhncyu ghncjv.’

Swift thought nothing of that message but when he turned it over there was another one, different this time. This one read: ‘Nwqhncu twqhnca jvkhncy fpqhncd qhncv avkhncnkhncdchnc gcnhjv uchncj ftqhncyu ukhncjv !ghnctchncyghncd.’ Swift started to feel uneasy but as soon as he put the sword in his belt he felt better. He put the Hunting Rifle down and left the bullets on the table. If he was going to take the sword he was going to have to get rid of something else and the Magnum was his favourite of the two, plus the Hunting Rifle was heavier. Swift made a move towards the door and peered out, Gavin was signalling that he had taken far too long. Swift hurried out and Gavin walked straight in, looking incredibly suspicious and shifty. Swift thought that this was very un-professional and that Gavin should take more care with his work.

Join now!

Gavin was out again a few seconds later; he had probably taken the Hunting Rifle that Swift had left on the table.

‘That’s our train, guys.’ Jed said. They walked over to it and filed onboard like a group of school children.

Once onboard, the crew had to endure Jed and Gamma playing Poker with the bullet clips as the chips. This raised a few eyebrows and turned a few heads but a lot of the people had seen it before so it didn’t cause too much of a stir.

Swift seemed to find everything irritating, especially Rox going to ...
