Loneliness in Of Mice and Men

around the guys, looking for Curley or looking for something that she left there as an excuse to talk to someone. As you can see, loneliness is one of the key factors to this story. Everyone in this story was or is lonely.   Loneliness affects a lot of the characters in this story. One of the lonely characters is Crooks. Crooks is lonely because he's black and no one wants to be near him. This was when blacks were segregated from whites. No one ever went to visit him. Also, because he's black, he has his room out in the stable with the horses. The other (white) guys have their bunks in a one room house type of building. The loneliness affects Crooks so that he remains in his room when he has some books to read. Loneliness affects in crooks social behaviour when Lennie enters his room he is automatically hostile to Lennie. He doesn’t see why Lennie should be allowed din his room if he is not allowed in their room.Another lonely character is Curley's wife. Curley's wife is found running around looking for Curley. Mostly, she's trying to find someone to talk to. She would usually only see Curley after he was done with his job and for her that's too long to go without talking to someone. What she did was hang around the guys and try to start a conversation with them. The guys don't talk to her because she's nothing but trouble.  When Lenny shows up, she tries to make friends with him and does. On the other hand George stays away because he knows that she's nothing but trouble. She's trouble because if Curley found her flirting with the other guys, he raises hell about it. Loneliness accounts for much of Lennie's inner conflicts, his dream for the farm, and the desire for friendship/affection. His desire for friendship/affection makes him have a obsession for soft objects. The relationships in Lennie's life do not provide him with a sufficient amount of care and affection that Lennie needs. This leads him to desire soft items such as a mouse, a puppy, a rabbit, or even a dress for a source of comfort. Wanting these soft items is his effort to achieve companionship that he does not acquire from anyone else. Loneliness has made Lennie very cautious towards others because he has to worry about getting in trouble. His ideas about the farm, rabbits, mice, and puppies all derive from his obsession/need for a friendlier and more interactive lifestyle. Lennie's lifestyle now does not permit him to obtain this specific way of life with affability. His mental condition along his uncontrollable strength makes him unable to achieve this sociability. In conclusion, when people are experiencing loneliness, their actions, as well as their way of life is altered. Also some problems and changes are caused by loneliness. And as seen in the novel Of Mice and Men", it is proven that humans have a common need for companionship.
