My visit to the Lake District.

Harry Lovejoy.                          My visit to the Lake District.

On the first Saturday of the summer holiday my Dad told me that he was going to take my sister and me to the Lake District for a week after a two day stay in Tee-Side with some friends. The following Saturday we packed our bags and got an early night, as we were leaving at 5a.m the next morning. Both us had a good night and we ended up getting up at four so we had enough time for breakfast and so that we could double check that we had every thing we would need. Dad pulled up outside on time and soon we off on our six hour journey to Tee-side. The going was good until we got on the motorway at Winchester, where a lorry had veered into another causing a five car pill up, which kept us at a stand still for three hours.

After that the rest of the journey was fine, apart from finding our friends house in Tee-side, which turned out to be on the main road from the motorway to the city. As we walked towards the house we were greeted by a hyper-active German Shepherd that wouldn’t let us through the front gate. Luckily, Dads friend Mick and his wife Margaret came to the gate, calmed the dog down and lead us through to the back garden, where we talked until it was dark. Then we went in and had dinner before going to bed. The next morning we all got up about 10a.m and had breakfast. Shortly after that we were back in the and on our way to where we were staying in the Lake District.

It took us an hour to get there and another half an hour before we found the farm where our caravan was. The owner of the farm gave us a warm welcome and then showed us to where we would be staying. To our surprise it turned out to be a fourty-five luxury portable home, with three separate bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room. That afternoon we unpacked all our bags and walked to the small village by where we were staying. At around 6p.m we returned and watched television until ten when we decided to go to bed. The following morning we got up about ten and decided what we were going to do. We finally decided to go to Windermere to have a look around and have some lunch. We had some breakfast and were there at about quarter to eleven. We parked the car and walked down the high street towards Lake Windermere.  At the bottom of the high street we walked passed a camping shop where I saw a knife that I wanted for fishing. I asked Dad and he said No. But after a few minutes of me nagging he got me one, as long as he had when I wasn’t using it. After that we carried on walking towards the lake where we got on a ferry to take us to the aquarium. After thirteen miles of sailing we got off to find that it was closed, and were forced to wait an hour in the cold until the next one. We caught the next ferry back to Windermere and got to the car, then went home. We had another early night as we were going to get up early so we could drive round the countryside and mountains. The place we decided to go was rarely visited and usually the weather is too bad to go up there as all it is tarmac running round the mountain with no walls and no road markings. We went to bed early and got up at about eleven a.m, then had breakfast and got ready to go. Just as I was leaving I saw my knife and decided to take. As I grabbed it my dad sharply said ‘leave it here, we won’t need it’. He then walked off down to the car leaving me to lock up the caravan, as I walked towards the door I decided ‘it’s my knife, I’ll take it if I want.’ I walked back over to it, slipped it into my pocket then went to the car.

We set off and with in half and hour we turned off the main road and headed for the mountain. Shortly we were at a T-junction where we wanted to turn left. We stopped and looked around, to the right was another road that looped back to the main road, in front of us was the mountain and to the left was a gravel road with signs saying ‘steep roads’, ‘rockslides’ and ‘wildlife’. This was the road we wanted. We took it, and almost straight away the road started too get very steep, after a mile or so ...
