As Max lay dying this man slowly hung up the phone and seemed to disappear from the
house.
Nobody came to the house for three hours. It was Max's mother, home for her
lunch break. She saw her dead son near the phone and found Jane dead in Max's room.
She called the police and within ten minutes detectives were all over the house. They
found no trace of a break-in and no clues as to how the assailant got into the house. Three
days later a simliar crime was committed 10 miles east of the original crime. Once again
there was no sign of a break-in and no prints or clues of any kind. Everyone in the area
was alerted that there was a killer on the loose. Police stated that no description was
available at that time but urged people to keep their doors locked and not to stay home
alone. Six days passed and still no evidence was found.
On the sixth day a man, Sam, was watching a movie with his wife. They were
newly weds of three weeks. Sam heard their dog barking and got up to check on him.
Before he got to his dog the dog suddenly stopped barking. When Sam got to the dog
in other room it fell down dead. The back door was left open. He ran outside and saw
a slim black rope hanging from the roof and when he went to investigate he heard his
wife scream. He rushed back to his wife and just as he came upon her dead body,
throat slit straight across, he suffered the same fate.
When the police arrived they checked the roof of the house since they saw the
rope also. The shingles had been pulled up and a whole was cut into the roof, but the
shingles were held together with black tape on the underside so as not to be noticeable,
thereby creating a flap with which to sneak into a house via the attic. The other houses
were then checked for this and the investigators found that all the houses had the same
thing done to them. After this killing the police dubbed the serial murderer the "Roof Top
Killer". Everyone was alerted to lock and nail their attics shut.
The killings subsided for a while after that. Three days passed, then another three,
until a full month has gone by. No other murders were reported. The was still nothing that
could be found as evidence of who did this. No suspects at all. Another 5 months passed
and the families of the muredered were demanding justice. Unfortunately they did not
receive a glimmer of that until two years later. At the two year anniversary of the first
murder the case was re-opened and new detectives were brought in along with old ones
to try to bring justice to the killer once and for all. The families were questioned about
the victims as well as close friends, any alumni and any other people that knew the victims.
Information that the case was re-opened leaked out to the press and it was all over the
papers.
Two days after the papers were out there was another murder. Investigators
flocked to the scene of the crime and examined the house. The roof was not cut in the
same fashion as the ones were years ago. While still examining that house the lead
detectivereceived a call. He was told that three separate killings were committed that
same night also. It seems as though copycat killers were running rampant thinking that
they would not get caught. Three of the four apparent killers were caught. They were
all seen at one point climbing onto the roof of the victim. They all also knew their victims
in some way and it was known to at least one person that they disliked the people they
killed. One of the killings, however, went unsolved. No one saw anyone climbing onto
the roof of this one particular house. Everyone that knew the two victims was questioned
and determined to not be the killer. It seemed as though the original killer had come out
of retirement. Specialists were brought in to examine the bodies and photos of the
previous victims. They determined that the victims were all killed with a long japanese
sword, or katana. (It is commonly known as a ninja sword). Though the idea that a
ninja was going around killing people sounded completely ridiculous, it would certainly
give an explanation as to why the killer was never seen entering or exiting the home. But
it would not give an explanation as to why these murders had occurred.
No motive would ever be found. The "Roof Top Killer" would also never be
found. Whether he was a ninja or simply a very sly man would never be discovered.
Currently he is living happily with his wife, two children, and dog. He is an important
part of his community. He volunteers often around his community and at his childrens'
school. If he were to confess that he had killed all those people nobody would believe
him. He doesn't seem capable of such horror. He is a loving husband. He is a caring father.
He is anyone...and he is still out there.
