As soon as the jittery old Ulsterbus pulled up on to the grounds of Slaughtneil hall we scurried down the three steps off the bus. We all scanned the car park for the two men who were holding the car. I was the first one to see them and the car and just when I was about to dart across the car park Nicky grabbed my left arm and said to me indiscreetly that we had to act cool or they would think we were a bunch of single minded juveniles. So walking over, deliberately at a leisurely pace to hide our anticipation, we approached the two men.
It wasn’t long until the car was ours. I could not believe we had our very first car. I just stood there dumb-founded gazing at it. To us it was a our own eighteen thousand, Toyota MR2 Roadster, ABS, full body kit, spoiler and alloy wheels. To everyone else, a tattered, banged up old Nova, scratched paint work, real scrap yard material. I was still standing there but David and Nicky were already exploring the inside of the car. I was thinking to myself this could be wrong, what would Mammy say but then I thought “What the hell !!!”
I jumped in, this was it, no more walking anywhere, anytime. David, Nicky and I were all in the Nova. David, who I usually called Casper because he was a bit of a Mummy’s boy, was for driving I was in the front and Nicky, sitting in the back.
As David put the rusty old key into the ignition the car give a rattly jump and the engine started up. Chuck, Chuck, Chuck........Chuck, Chuck,.....Drunnn........ David cautiously pulled away. I threw on a bit of music and we were off. First we wrecked about the car park to get her warmed up. David looked straight in front of him and about hundred yards away there was a wire mesh fence that surrounded the grounds. He said to Nicky and I that he was going to drive right through it. He built up the speed rapidly and threw it into fifth gear. As David accelerated I was threw back into my seat. I glared wide eyed trough the wind screen as we headed straight for it. David slammed on the breaks, the tyres squealed and we all jolted forward as the car came to a dramatic halt. The smell of burning rubber drifted up our noses.
Now it was my turn, I was like a child at Christmas with a new toy. Full of excitement, I tightly grasped the steering wheel. All I could hear was the purr of the engine and the beat of the music. I felt I was the next Colin Mc Crae. I decided I’d play with danger so I knocked off the lights and headed out to the open road.
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, earsplitting music, intensifying speeds tearing down the road. The adrenalin was now rushing through my body, I had reached the point of no return. I continued to speed down the road then out of the blue, the music on the radio was drowned out by the wailing of a police siren. At first I thought I was imagining it but I knew it was real when the blinding police lights were flashing in the rear mirror. I had to get away. No way was I going to stop. If I did, I knew I would get caught and my parents would kill me. With this thought in my head I knew there was only one thing I could do - Put the pedal to the metal.
My heart
fell
to
my
stomach. We all started to panic as fear itself crept in to the car. My hands were sliding on the steering wheel on a cushion of sweat and I felt my heart was going to explode. The roar of the engine grew louder as the chase continued. I began to feel sick as the mixed emotions swarmed my body. I know I had to lose the tail and fast as the image of the police car got bigger and bigger. We came up to another corner but a feeling inside me knew I no longer had full control over to car. The steering began to over power me as I tried to manoeuvre the car around the sharp bend. I thought I got a glimpse of something in the mist but I couldn’t make it out so I switched on the headlights. There in front of me was a massive Lorry its lights engulfed our car there was no way round and it was heading straight for us when ~ Oh No......No......Nooooooooooo!!!
I heard the bang and next thing I knew Mammy was shouting to me
“Get up Lazy bones, I thought you were going out to Slaughtneil”
As I rubbed my eyes I realised I had dropped off to sleep and although I was sorry that I had missed Slaughtneil, I was so relieved it was all just a dream.
