Romeo and Juliet

Shakespeare uses rhyming couplets to emphasise tragic moments and themes of high dramatic or emotional intensity. The use the rhyming couplets evokes how incapable and reckless Romeo is. Romeo feels being so in love with a woman he cannot posses. Specifically when the reader believes that in Shakespeare's time this poetic style of verse was used to present moments of steep dramatic or emotional force.

Shakespeare applies detailed metaphors, such as "love is a smoke raised with the fumes of sighs, a fire sparkling in lover's eyes" to highlight how distressing his love for Rosaline is. Shakespeare uses the comparisons like 'sweet' and 'gall' to symbolise the opposition and disarrangement Romeo is feeling.

Benvolio suggests that Romeo looks at the women, "examine other beauties", however Romeo is unwilling to because he does not believe there is another woman as "fair" as Rosaline. Romeo heard about the party that Rosaline would be there but he found Juliet and falls in love with her same way as Juliet and both agreed to marry each other.

In Act 3 Scene 1, the relationship between the Capulet and Montegue families is seen to be confrontational. This is demonstration by Mercutio and Tybalt's hate for each other. Mercutio's line "O calm, dishonourable, vile submission! / Alla stoccatta carries it away." suggest that Romeo is getting soft because he marries Juliet and he is about to fight against Juliet's cousins which is Tybalt. However the audience realises that they know how Romeo is married to Juliet but Tybalt and Mercutio don't know about this. Romeo is displaying that he loves the Capulets because he just married one of the Capulets, which is Juliet.

Romeo is obviously experiencing extreme emotional hatred against Tybalt. He has been forced to fight Tybalt and killed hi. The use of imagery such as "fiery-eyed fury" underlines the anger of Romeo like he is burning with anger and his eyes are like burning with fir. He feels compelled to fight Tybalt because of his anger. Romeo takes on the role of "revenger" at the expense of loving Juliet. Romeo's actions are like he is sorry for himself and Mercutio. Romeo's actions are underlined based on spontaneous vengeance. He realises the extent of his actions when he reflects, "O I am fortunes fool!" as he realises his actions were quick and he should have thought it through and now he has lost Juliet.

In conclusion Shakespeare has developed a believable and successful character by using different types of language to express the different emotions Romeo feels throughout the play.
