Compare the ways in which the relationship between the mother and daughter is presented in text A and text B.

Text A is a transcript of a mother and daughter-playing scrabble. Analysing the ways in which they speak and interact with each other can make judgements about the nature of their relationship. It is a close relationship conversation and only made for a small audience. In contrast, text B is an extract from a newspaper article. It is more difficult to make accurate judgements about the nature of the mother and daughters relationship because the information is presented from a third party perspective. Where direct speech is included, the comments reported are only from the mother, the daughter’s opinion or perspective is not presented.

From reading the two texts the relations come across as very different. But from analysing the texts some similarities are visible. Firstly in both the mother and daughter are shown to have a close relationship and come across sometimes as more as friends than family. In text A the mother and daughter are having a relaxed game of scrabble. The close relationship is evident in text A from the overlapping where it says

Join now!

                ‘ and I wish you’d.’

                ‘Oh I forgot.

From the overlapping this shows the familiarity between the mother and the daughter and how they are used to be speaking with each other. From studying text B, the mother and daughter also come across as a close couple. Firstly we can see this through the sentence ‘No mother wants to know her 12 year old is having sex but I’m glad she told me.’ This shows how the mother wants to protect her daughter ...
