The first, source I, written during the Somme battle, has a very positive tone and suggests the battle is a success. However, source J, also written by Lloyd George has a very different attitude, which unlike source I is negative. Source J which was written many years after the Somme, Lloyd George could have had more access to information which may have changed his mind. The difference in attitude and tone in both sources is obvious as source I states �turned in our favor� which seems to show it was a success and source J states �This offensive was already a failure� this shows the opposite tone to source I. These may be some of the reason why source I differs so much from source J. When source J was written it was the 1930�s and many years after the war so therefore Lloyd George would have a greater access to information and would have knowledge of the whole battlefield and its events and not just the part he would of visited during the battle of the Somme. Additionally, Lloyd George was no longer the secretary of war he had been the Prime minister twice since 1917, therefore he may also be thinking about his reputation. However, source J was extracted from his war memoirs and he may be looking back over his life and the war expressing his true feelings about it.
