Felix was outside the front door, he stared at the gleaming brass knocker and swallowed, his throat was dry and his heart was thumping. It was almost ten years since he had last been here and he wondered if she might have moved on. The palms of his hands were sweating and his heart was beating even more rapidly. He looked up. He delved into his pocket and pulled out his handkerchief and dried his hands. He was having a flashback to the day he stormed out of this very door, slamming it behind him and now he was beginning to wonder why he had dared to come back. Whilst reflecting he noticed that the door was now a maroon colour rather than royal blue as he remembered it. He was having visualizations of what might happen when she opened the door. Would she remember him? Would she speak to him? The only way was forward. He peered into the windows next to him and tried to look through the narrow slats in the blinds. He could see a young child watching the television. Felix sighed, maybe she had moved on. He heard a click and turned around. There she was, a grey haired woman in her mid fifties peering at him round the corner of the door. She opened it wider and they both continued staring at each other for some time, several seconds but it seemed like forever. Felix was wondering whether she was having an anagnorisis or did she genuinely not know who he was? She started crying and Felix was worried until she broke into a smile and they embraced in a passionate hug.

She called to the young boy who was sitting on the sofa, addressing him as Felix, she looked at him and said “Yes Felix, he’s yours and mine” They both smiled and grasped each others hands, Felix could barely contain his excitement, all his dreams over the last ten years were coming true.

They had been walking for at least ten minutes and neither of them had spoken. The silence was eventually broken by a beggar calling at the side of the pavement to which they both lied and said, “Sorry I don’t have any change” and after that ...
