One man expressed his opinion of the constructions stating "to say that we're going to condemn a religion and castigate a billion people in the world because they're Muslims, to say that they shouldn't have the ability to pray near the World Trade Center—I don't think that's going to bring people together and cross the divide". Many people also believe what he said. To judge the whole religious group for the one crime would be completely wrong and unjust. Another man said that he understood what it was like to be discriminated against, being black, and so supported the constructions as to make an effort to stop any discrimination against the Muslims.
The right of the Muslims to practice their religion where ever and whenever they so chose is a right that is protected by the United States Constitution. The right to practice a religion is a sacred right that defines who we are as a nation. Furthermore, the Islamic Community Center is planned to be build on land that was purchased lawfully and legally and so the owner of the land has the right to do what he or she wished to do with it. If the owner of the property wishes to build a community center he or she should be able to do that without such a controversy over it. This is the right to property that every American has.
The question that many opponents to the construction raise about the “insensitivity” of the construction of the Islamic building so close to the Trade Center has no grounds. This is because there were a number of Muslims who were victims of the attack and so the “insensitivity” could be argued and geared towards any religious buildings nearby. In addition, the Islamic Community Center, when completed, would be used as more than simply a mosque exclusively for the religious practice of Islam. The Center would be a place to promote interfaith tolerance and respect.
The denial of the rights to build a mosque around the World Trade Center would undermine the American Way. It would send a message that thought in American all people are equal before the law some are separate and looked upon differently in their own home. It would say that America had a negative outlook on Muslims and Islam as a religion and the freedoms that the nation prides itself on are selective and not as legit as they appear to be.
The construction of the Islamic Community Center must go on as planned or the ideals and principals that America was based off of would be disregarded and overlooked. The negative out looks to the construction not only send bad messages and lead to discrimination. Most of the arguments against the building of the “Ground Zero Mosque” are due to hurt feelings and the emotions left over from the 9/11 attack, the construction of this new building would be a step forward for the nation.
