This comparative essay is an essay about a short story called ‘Clothes’ by George Friel and a poem called ‘Timothy Winters’ by Charles Causley. In this essay I will examine the themes of each piece of writing and go over similes, metaphors and the literal text in each piece of writing.  Each piece of writing is about a poor boy with very little clothing and how this affects him in his everyday life. The difference between the short story ‘clothes’ compared to the poem Timothy Winters is that the boy is cared for and loved. Although the family is poor his mother try’s her best to look after him and get him new clothes, where as in ‘Timothy Winters’ the young boy is not cared for at all and is sadly neglected.

Both stories examine themes of poverty. The short story talks about the boy’s self-esteem and pride and gives us a start, middle, and, end. I felt I knew more about the boy as I read each page. I felt sorry for him as his mother tried to get him new clothes and he didn’t want them because he would be labelled at school as ‘the poor boy’ this made him seem a little vain.
