This essay is about Banquo, the ghost from Macbeth and Hamlet’s father, the ghost in Hamlet. I am going to compare and contrast these two ghosts. I am going to state three points about these two ghosts.

My first point is that they were both murdered. Banquo was stabbed to death by two assassins hired by Macbeth. While Hamlet’s father was poisoned by his brother Claudius. So both of these murders were committed by different methods. Also both these murders were established for greedy purposes. Banquo was murdered because Macbeth thought that Banquo’s son Fleance was a threat to his throne. But Hamlet’s father’s was murdered by his brother Claudius so that he could become king. That is my first point.

My next point is about how the ghosts’ appearance was. When Banquo’s ghost appeared at Macbeth’s feast he was covered in blood and cuts. His face was drenched in blood. While Hamlet’s father’s ghost appeared at the battlements he was very angry and his face was reeking with revenge. But he had no blood or cuts. So Banquo’s ghost shows that his murder was very vicious while Hamlet’s father’s ghost showed his murder was very clean and was done very stealthily. My next point is about how the ghosts’ appearance was. When Banquo’s ghost appeared at Macbeth’s feast he was covered in blood and cuts. His face was drenched in blood. While Hamlet’s father’s ghost appeared at the battlements he was very angry and his face was reeking with revenge. But he had no blood or cuts. So Banquo’s ghost shows that his murder was very vicious while Hamlet’s father’s ghost showed his murder was very clean and was done very stealthily. Also both ghosts were wearing some form of war clothing. Banquo’s ghost was wearing his war armour while Hamlet’s father’s ghost was wearing his battle dress. This expresses that both ghosts, when they were alive were both great warriors. That is my second point.

My third and final point is the ghosts’ actions. When Banquo’s ghost appeared at Macbeth’s feast he did not talk but just stared at Macbeth. Macbeth was the only one who could see him. Then suddenly Banquo’s ghost went disappeared. While Hamlet’s father’s ghost appeared at the battlements and Hamlet’s friend Horatio saw him. He then disappeared. Then reappeared the next night when Hamlet was there. Then him and Hamlet began talking. Hamlet’s father’s ghost told Hamlet that his brother King Claudius had murdered him and that Hamlet must revenge his father’s death. He then disappeared and reappeared again when Hamlet was talking to his mother Queen Gertrude. Only Queen Gertrude could not see Hamlet’s father’s ghost. So Banquo’s ghost did not talk and appeared only once which was for a short period of time. But Hamlet’s father’s ghost was the completed opposite of Banquo’s ghost. Hamlet’s father’s ghost appeared several times and talked. So that is my last point. So my conclusion is that these two supernatural characters from two of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays which were Macbeth and Hamlet had a few similarities like they both were murdered for greedy purposes and both were wearing some sort of war clothing but the majority of the comparisons were differences. For example the both of them were murdered in different ways, Hamlet’s father’s ghost talked while Banquo’s ghost didn’t. I think the main reason for this was that William Shakespeare created these two supernatural characters for his plays’ Macbeth and Hamlet for different reasons.
