2. Trace and discuss the role of letters and written communication throughout the novel. How important is this to the development of the plot and various relationships?

  Frankenstein was introduced at first through a series of letters, allowing some major themes of the story to be magnified and analyzed further in depth. It causes readers to think about what has been mentioned in the text, and how it exemplifies the entire story altogether as a gothic novel. Throughout this essay, I will be commenting on how this manner of epistolary narrative has contributed to the major themes of the novel.

  When the letters begin, it is evidently clear that the tone is informal. Most of the letters are written to Elizabeth, hence showing that the 2 siblings are close despite the absence of a blood relationship. The epistolary form of an essay adds greater realism and verisimilitude to a story, chiefly because it mimics the workings of real life. It is thus able to demonstrate differing points of view without recourse to the device of an omniscient narrator. This is proven in the text through Victor’s personal thoughts and feelings that are being conveyed to Elizabeth. As these letters are written over a period of time, we can thus observe the degradation of Victor’s mind in a psychological aspect and how the introduction of the monster has had a further adverse effect on him. It also depicts a more accurate version of the story as it is written as a first person perspective instead of a third person narrative.

  Secondly, the term “Frankenstein” usually depicts a monster created by spare parts, rising from the dead and terrorizing the innocent villagers with a limitless rage due to not being accepted as one of their kind. To some extent in the novel, that is true. However, when the monster is initially created, the line of difference between creator and monstrosity was without a doubt, evidently clear. However, as the story progresses, that line of difference starts to degenerate, and one can slowly identify growing similarities between Victor and the monster.
