Gary Sininse uses a lot of editing in order to keep the viewer watching, and also to inform us about the characters and the story. The film maker has also used a lot of editing in the film ‘Of Mice and Men’. When the girl in the red dress is running, Lennie and George are also running through the fields at the same time, at the start. In this scene the director keep editing the film so it shows the girl, Lennie and George at the same time. This makes the film more dramatic.
One of the features that keep the viewer watching and engaged is the title sequence, because it builds an atmosphere for the viewer of how the movie will be like. For e.g. if a title sequence has a happy joyful title sequence with happy music we know it will be adventurous.
In the title sequence of the film ‘Of Mice and Men’, there are a lot of dull colours are being used, mainly black and white, with a black background, and bold white font with a bit fancy lettering and the flickering and flashing lights in the background, bringing up a train effect, because this is where the film really starts. All these things that are in the title sequence make the title sequence a sad mood, because of the dull colours and sad music
Also another important feature which will capture the viewer is the camera shots that are used, and the editing. For e.g. if the director uses only one camera shot throughout the movie, like a view shot, the movie will seem very boring and the viewer won’t know what is going on because they don’t know who is saying the dialogue in the film which will make the movie very boring and plain and the viewer will stop watching the movie, so to keep the viewer watching Gary Sininse uses a lot different camera shot. In this film the director used a lot of different camera shots like, a long shot of lennie and George, showing them running through the field, a close up shot of the guns, misleading the viewer that there could be blood, murder and injuries.
Also a lot of editing is used to keep the viewer watching the film, because it make the film more dramatic and it shows the viewer the facial expressions of the character, it also gives the viewers information on the storyline and the plot of the film, in this film, ‘Of Mice and Men’ a lot of editing was used when Lennie is working, it shows how easy he can pick up heavy stuff and how others workers can’t keep up with him, this is giving us a lot of information on Lennie.
Also in the film, ‘Of Mice and Men’ there is a lot of dialogue which gives us information about the character. For e.g. on the train Lennie and George have a conversation, Lennie says to George, “George where are we going”
George replies, “Going away. Go to sleep Lennie”
Then Lennie replies “I am sleeping George”
This shows us the simple ness of Lennie.
Also a lot of different colours are used like the colour of the green land, the blue clothes Lennie has on, and the red dress which represents danger, something bad is happening.
In the first seven minutes of the film by Gary Sininse all the features that he has used, the setting, the colours, the music, the title sequence, camera shots, all the editing and dialogue and the different use of colours, all this builds up the atmosphere of the film, and increases our knowledge of the characters and the setting. It also raises a lot of questions in our mind. Why are George and Lennie running away? Why has the girl got a rip in her dress? Why can’t one of the men talk properly? Is there a connection between the girl in the red dress and the two men who were running away? These entire questions come in to the viewers mind, and the curiosity is what makes them carry on watching the film. Gary Sininse has been very successful in his aims to interest the audience of his screen adaptation of Steinbeck’s, ‘Of Mice and Men’, because all the features he uses keeps the viewer watching and finding the answers to the curious questions which lay in the viewers mind.
