What techniques does Gary Sininse use to interest his audience in the first seven minutes of his screen adaptation of Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men?’

When film makers adapt a novel for the screen, the director has to make some decisions. The director doesn’t always follow the exact order of events from the adapted novel.  For instance the director may modify the setting of the movie to generate a different mood which will capture the viewers mind and make them want to carry on watching the movie. In this film, ‘Of Mice and Men’  at the start the director applies a mid western American style theme, with the sun shining, and the sand and dust rising because of the horses racing through the village, which creates a chasing action packed mood.

The director also decided to use a variety of different camera shot to be used in different places, for different reasons in order to make the film more exciting. Some examples for the different ranges of camera shots used, for e.g. a close up of the girl running at the start in the red dress to show her facial expressions and how scared and desperate she is. Also there is a long shot of a group of men approaching the river. There is also a scene where it shows George looking up to the men as they are hiding, this is a view shot.

Gary Sininse uses a lot of editing in order to keep the viewer watching, and also to inform us about the characters and the story. The film maker has also used a lot of editing in the film ‘Of Mice and Men’. When the girl in the red dress is running, Lennie and George are also running through the fields at the same time, at the start. In this scene the director keep editing the film so it shows the girl, Lennie and George at the same time. This makes the film more dramatic.
