The drama was also about Faith. Jack said that God had told him to murder the women. So, I thought that Jack must have a lot of faith in God to do what God had ‘allegedly’ told him, and to believe something good will happen to him eventually.
Then Jack completely changed his mind and said that his brother Don had killed the women, and the fact that Jack had been in contact with some of the women was because he was trying to protect them. Jack was trying to make out he was some kind of saint, making a lot of people feel rather guilty for saying Jack was a murderer in the meantime.
I realised that Jack was using God and Don as ‘scapegoats’ – he couldn’t admit that he had killed the women, it wasn’t him and God hadn’t told him to do it.
Jack’s parents had said that he wasn’t particularly religious, so why did Jack suddenly take an interest in God around the time of the murder? And why did God tell Jack to do it?
Don had had an affair with Jacks wife – his child was in fact Dons. What a great way to get revenge on Don, tell everyone that it was in Don who had killed the women and Jack had merely been covering up for Don.
I think that Jack was too scared and didn’t have enough courage to admit that he had done wrong and was trying to make other people think that he was innocent. He even made people begin to feel sorry for him, 1when he came out with comments like “it’s my wife’s fault” or “ask Don” and 2 when he gave out £100,000 to the victims family. To give all that money – he must be good. But he won’t be needing it when he’s dead, and why give all that money if you hadn’t done anything or didn’t feel guilty?
