William Golding wrote “Lord of the Flies” with the intention to show the corruption in our society and the failings of human nature in general. In this book he has developed characters and themes that are universal and common to all mankind.
One of the main characters in the novel is Piggy. Although he plays major role in presenting the ideas in the plot of “Lord of the Flies,” we never find out his real name. His “friends” call him Piggy because he is very fat, short, wears spectacles, and has asthma. He finds that very humiliating and feels a lot of pain inside which is repeated several times throughout the book. He is a very sensitive person. He is hurt because the people whom he tries to help and be friends with, do not respect him, only because of his external look and the way he behaves. This is Piggy’s downfall. To be a successful leader, one must, above all else, command respect but Piggy does not gain this necessary respect from the others.

He is the symbol of the world of adults, logic, and reason. He is the only one who acts and talks sensibly, has not lost his self-control and presence of mind in this extreme situation. After spending more time with him, Ralph sees that the fat boy is a good friend – trustworthy and reliable. He is one of the few boys that stay with him after Jack breaks the rules and becomes the new chief. Piggy does not betray his friend like the others do. He is a loyal person and stands behind him until the end.
Piggy is an outsider from the society and the whole hierarchy on the island. The other boys ignore him even when he has his asthma attacks: “Nobody minded him.” They laugh at him and do not let him talk even when he has the conch: “Oh, shut up!” Even Ralph, talking about the murder of Simon, says: “You were outside. Outside the circle. You never really came in.”

He also is the only one who has the courage to disagree with the hierarchy and the leader and criticize them. Another feature of his is that he is idealistic – in the end, only he tries to keep the rules and the significance of the conch. He believes that unity and understanding among the boys would save them: “Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?”
As mentioned before, Piggy is the only person on the island that acts in an adult like way in this situation. In his words there are reason and skepticism, ...
