‘And bring in cloudy night immediately. Spread thy close curtain, love performing night’
Not only does this quote indicate to us that Juliet wishes for the night to come however, it tells us that she wishes to make love to Romeo:
‘So tedious is this day’
Also this quote tells us that she cannot wait for the day to be over. In other words it is feeling very long as she is anxious for Romeo to come.
After this Juliet starts to feel extreme feelings of adoration for Romeo. She shows this to us by describing him in great words:
‘Romeo is day and he stands out in the night’
Ironically Shakespeare uses darkness to describe Romeo, since darkness is one of the main themes in the story and he is directing it at Romeo, this quote reveals to us some foreshadowing of what might happen to him:
‘Take him and cut him into little stars and he will make the face of heaven so fine’
Finally this quote indicates to us that she does feel these emotions such as adoration and love towards Romeo as she says that he is so beautiful he would make the face of heaven look even better than it is now.
After some time the nurse enters the scene and is quite anxious to tell Juliet something. By the wringing of her hands we can identify the feelings of anxiousness. The nurse stupidly says that someone is dead but does not say who it is:
‘He’s dead’
Senselessly Juliet believes it is Romeo who is dead and starts to feel very bad. Suddenly now the nurse says to Juliet Tybalt is dead. Instinctively Juliet believes that both of them are now dead:
‘Is Romeo slaughtere’d and is Tybalt dead?’
She directly asks the nurse is this true and she replies:
‘Tybalt is gone, and Romeo banished; Romeo hat kille’d him’
Now after she hears this she still is confused, she tries to confirm the news by repeating what the nurse said to her. Finally the nurse tells her the full news and then she starts to feel angry towards Romeo.
Now she starts to feel betrayal of Romeo, because when he made the vows of the marriage he just broke them. Now she starts using oxymoron’s to describe Romeo e.g. ‘Fiend angelical’. Once hearing this, the nurse decides the join the onslaught of words being pinned against Romeo. After hearing this, straight away Juliet starts to defend Romeo from the nurse:
‘Blister’d be thy tongue for such a wish! He was not born to shame’
After this the nurse tries to persuade her into bad naming Romeo but she defends him by saying to her he is my wife and I shall not be rude to him. She rather takes Romeo’s side than Tybalt’s because she loves Romeo. After a bit more feelings of sorrow for Romeo the scene ends and that is it.
I sympathise with Juliet because of the circumstances that she has landed herself in by marrying Romeo. From the start of the play we know that she is going to be tormented by this news, this is shown to us from the prologue where it says
‘Star crossed lovers’
This tells us their fates have already been decided telling us that something bad will happen. She is only a 14 year old girl and is going through the age of maturing where you do feel such emotions as this however, one could argue that she is to young to go through such trauma.
In conclusion I do sympathise with Juliet but to a certain extent because she had brought this whole mess to herself by marrying her group’s rivals. In my own opinion i do sympathise with her because she is too young to realise what she has landed herself into and therefore has to suffer.
