Clarke has said that for her a poem begins by “two sides coming together.” Show how this is true of “Catrin” and one other poem.

        The themes in both “Catrin” and “A difficult Birth” show two sides coming together. A first example of this is in “Catrin” where the theme is the struggle of actually giving birth to her child and the struggle that follows. “Still I am fighting you off.” This quote shows that even after birth there is conflict. Clarke is showing how love and conflict go together and there is always conflict between parents and children. A level of commitment is needed by both parents and children in order for their relationship to work. This is also true of  “A Difficult Birth” as the Ewe giving birth has a big commitment to the lamb she is giving birth to, trying to ensure it’s safety and the people around trying to ensure the safety of the Ewe.  “And you find us peaceful, at a cradling that might have been a death.” This quote shows relief for the safety of the lamb and the safety of the Ewe.  Also the commitment from the English and the Irish who are fighting for what they feel is the right thing to do. There is also a lot of tension in the two poems, the tension of giving birth and hoping for the safety of the two people or animals and also the tension of waiting for the peace deal to be settled.

        The imagery in the two poems also show Clarke’s idea is true. In “Catrin” Clarke says the mother and child “fought.” This suggests the pain of childbirth but how after all that pain love is created. This is also true of “A difficult Birth.”  “We strained together, harder than we dared. I feel a crack in the limbs.” Again this quote shows the pain of the Ewe giving birth and the struggle the vets had trying to help.
