Choose two main events in the last hundred years which are particularly important in shaping the views of today's Loyalists/Unionists/ Protestants and Republicans/Nationalists/Catholics.

The protest was started by students, housing and unemployment were high for many Catholics, they had come to try and get equal rights. Protestants though this to be interfering with Irish issues, but had no power to stop it as it was supposed to be a "peaceful" demonstration. When marches were attacked, marchers would participate in the violence as much as the people attacking. The police were accused of taking sides during attacks like this. Marches caused more tension and increased confrontation on both the protestant and catholic sides. This eventually led to miss trust of the police and later the armed forces. The catholic population began feeling more and more isolated, nationalists began to lose faith in the forces. This caused both sides to begin sectarian killings.

The British army claimed they returned fire on IRA gunmen. Yet the protesters claim there were no shots fired apart from the ones the British army fired. This event led to anger, loss of law and order in Northern Ireland, Ira attacks on Britain's mainland. Unionists became more extreme, Northern Ireland assembly suspended after claims of a spy. More soldiers sent to area. Over all not everyone is happy, Dublin happy as it stops unionists direct rule, calls for IRA cease fire. Unionists fell betrayed by London. Increased number of sectarian killings. Nationalists happy with direct rule but still press for re-form.

In 1916 Easter rising and a war that would soon follow in 1919-1921 began, tension between Catholics and Protestants came to the boil and Britain handled this new situation very badly. This not only changed the people but it also changed the political landscape.

Interment, the imprisonment of suspects without trial. The suspects were badly treated, denied sleep, kept near continuous noise and hooded when they were not being questioned. 1600 of these suspects were Catholics. Because of not only the mistreatment but also the fact that they were imprisoned without trial, more and more parliamentary attacks occurred. In April to July 1971 8 killings, August to November 114 killings. Public outcry to stop the mistreatment went to deaf ears.
