Explain the differences in thinking between Hoover and Roosevelt in their approach to The Depression
Hoover and Roosevelt have two very different ways of approaching The Depression. Hoover who was orphaned at the age of eight and worked most of his life didn’t cure about the ordinary Americans. He let them go hungry and become homeless. Roosevelt on the other hand who was born into a rich family didn’t really meet ordinary people until he started Warm Springs. When he became then Governor of New York he did everything he could to help the people in his state.
When the Wall Street Crash happen and the Depression hit America Hoover believed that life would return to normal in a few months so he didn’t try anything to stop the Depression from continuing. He some realised the scale of The Depression and the real hopelessness and despair felt by the Americans. Roosevelt’s on the other hand believed that only the Government could stop the Depression by intervening massively and he believed that it was the Governments duty to pull America out of the Depression. As he had done as the Governor of New York he believed that the Government should give tax relief for the farmers and assistance for the elderly and the unemployed because he believed that it wasn’t the workers faults that they are out of work.
