In 1936 Germany changed gear. Hitler had always believed that Germany had to be ready to fight a war, but in 1936 he decided to prepare Germany for war at the expense of everything else. So in October he put Goering in charge of the economy with orders to be ready to fight and win a major war by 1940. Goering was a poor administrator. He was vain and jealous and spent too much time quarrelling with other officials. He gave contracts to large firms rather than small ones because it was easier to deal with a few rich and powerful industrialists than with many smaller firms. In any case the fact that he encouraged industries producing ammunitions and vital raw materials meant that others suffered in comparison of living of the people level led out. Even so after the war German workers had mostly pleasant memories of the years between 1933 and 1939. They remembered: the guaranteed pay packet order strength through joy and the smooth running of the political machinery.
Hitler was very interested in education. If his new empire was to last he would have to make the children and young people into good Nazis. Here is a rule that was made for the schools teachers and pupils are to give one another the German salute within and outside the school. At the beginning of each lesson the teacher goes greets it by raising his right arm and with the words "Heil Hitler" the class returns the salute by raising their right arms and with the words "Heil Hitler". The teacher closes the lesson after the pupils greet the members of staff by raising their right arms in the proper way within the boundaries of the school. An eleven-year-old girl has been noticed at school continually refusing to give the German salute. She gives her religion as the reason and quotes several passages interest in matters concerning the Fuhrer. The parents who have another daughter of six approve of this attitude and stubbornly refuse to make the child change her ways. They also refuse to give the German salute quoting the passage from the bible "Do nothing with a raised hand for this displeases the lord".
