Is there sufficient evidence in sources D – I to explain why the troubles broke out in Northern Ireland in 1969? Explain your answer using sources and knowledge from your own studies.

Sources D – I give us some indication of why the trouble broke out in Northern Ireland in 1969. However, they do not support specific evidence as to the reason why.

Historically, there have often been huge conflicts between the English and Irish, mainly because of the cultures and religions differing enormously. The English being Protestant and the Irish being Catholic. Each of them saw each other as the aggressors or the murderers. The English tried to rule the Irish and change their way of life.

Anglicization played a big part in how Britain became involved in the invasion of Ireland. Anglicization is changing the Irish way of life and trying to make them more like the English. Naturally, the Irish would object to this very strongly.

In 1846, there was a total failure of the potato crop in Ireland. The country consisted of peasant farmers. Without potatoes, the farmers were forced to eat their crop that they used to pay their rent, or they would starve to death. This led to eviction from their farms as they were unable to pay their rent. When all the food and crop were gone, thousands began to die of starvation and disease. Hunger made people desperate, and there were many attacks on people for their food. The British were shocked with what was happening in Ireland.

The British PM, Sir Robert Peel, urged parliament to take action. But too little was done too late. A million people died in the Potato Famine. Many tried to escape by emigrating. However, even the conditions on the ships were so bad that many more died.
