The new poor law in Uckfield. From source A, we can learn that the new poor law has saved a lot of money for the Uckfield union. All the parishes forming the Uckfield union used to spend £1,386 monthly, but that has been reduced to £550 that’s a saving of over £10,000. Because of this great saving, ratepayers have more money. This means industry has more money, which means higher wages can be offered. The new poor law has solved the problem of unemployment because the workhouse test has mad conditions in the workhouse less desirable. This gives people a motivation to go and get work. With the old poor law 250 able bodied labourers were receiving relief, with the new poor law that number went down to28. Even though the weather when the 250 in the workhouse was not as bad as when the 28 in the workhouse this shows determination for people to get a job undermining the weather severity.Source B contradicts source A because it shows evidence of outdoor relief being given. But I do not think that the sources disagree about the impact of the new poor law because source B does show figures of money being saved and workers with jobs. Where as source A shows us information about the impact of the new poor law. Another factor is that outdoor relief is being given because of the weather, in source A it says that despite the weather not many people where going into the workhouse. Where as in source B it says that people are going into the house because of the weather. These people could be the examples of the minority or it could be because source B is 6 years later than source A. The weather maybe be
