INTRODUCTION

The Village of Penley is described as a rural, linear Village as it only has one road which it can be accessed and exited.

It is a largely residential area with; semi- detatched council houses, owned semi detatched houses, council flats and owned flats. In some areas Penley can be quite an attractive village as the residents take pride in their gardens.

It is not an easy accessed village as car and bus are the only efficient forms of transport, and the buses only come every hour.

HOW PENLEY BECAME THE SITE FOR THE POLISH HOSPITAL

In the early years of World War II the buildings that were to be used for the Polish Hospital were occupied by the 83rd General Hospital of the U.S Army and used until 1943 purposely for the number of expected casualties at the beginning of the War.

On September 1st 1939, Poland was invaded by Germany, 2 days later, Great Britain and France declared War on Germany.  Despite being outnumbered by a better equipped Army, the Polish forces put up a desperate fight for their Country.  Polish Defence lines were smashed and military and civilian targets were being bombed.

On September 17th Russia Invaded Poland, and over 1 million Poles were deported to Prisoner of war, Forced labour and concentration camps.

In 1941 Germany invaded again.  It was then that the Polish soviet agreed they needed a new Army.

In 1942 the new Army and the hospital they had founded in Buzuluk left Russia for the Middle East.  The hospital then came under British command in Iraq, and moved to Palestine, further moving to Taranto in Italy.  The hospital transferred once more in September 1945 to Senigalia on the Adriatic Coast, before finally settling in Penley in August of 1946.

In the September of that year, the first patients started arriving at the hospital after a month of very hard work from the staff to get the hospital in working condition.

When the finished, the hospital consisted of:

30 Wards

1 Operating theatre

A Chapel

Treatment rooms

4 Pharmacies

4 Laboratories

An X-Ray department

A physiotherapy Department

An Occupational Therapy Department

3 Kitchens/Dining Rooms

Recreational Rooms

2 Snooker/Billiard rooms

Tennis Courts

Cinema

Football Team

Tennis/Archery/ Netball teams

2 Large Food Stores

2 Maintenance Departments

Mortuary

Nursery

Staff Quarters

A hospital Shop

In 1961 the Hospital took on a new role, becoming a geriatric and long stay hospital for the elderly, although the numbers of patients had hugely decreased.  It hadn’t totally declined even up until 1999.  The hospital still had 1 ward still in working order, Ward 7.  This still had patients in receiving treatment.

WHY DID THE POLISH PEOPLE COME TO PENLEY?

The causes of the 2nd World War

The Treaty Of Versailles:  In 1919 the Big Three, U.S.A, Great Britain and France met in The Hall Of Mirrors, France, Versailles.

Britain, represented by Lloyd George, France represented by Clemanceau and U.S.A represented by Woodrow Wilson, all signed a Peace Treaty, this was called The treaty Of Versailles

Germany wasn’t involved in the Peace Talks as The Big Three wanted revenge on them.

The Terms of The Treaty of Versailles were:

  • Germany had to give land to other Countries
  • Germany had to reduce it’s Armed Forces, The Army, The R.A.F and The Navy
  • Germany had to pay compensation to the Allies
  • Germany had to take the blame for causing World War I – “The War Guilt Clause”
  • Germany was forbidden to unite with Austria
  • Rhineland had to be demilitarised
