“The rise and success of the Nazi party was driven by race and ideology rather than politics” To what extent do you agree with this statement?

To say the Nazi party only got into power because of race and ideology would be rather ignorant and naïve of the whole situation as many factors affected the Nazi party’s popularity and success. Hitler as many people know was very opinionated and a great speaker, he used these skills to plough his way into power. The German public weren’t anywhere near as racist towards the Jews like Hitler was and neither had given any thought to the ‘Racial supremacy’ that Hitler fantasised about. He believed that to have Germany populated by people who’s ancestors were not true Germans was disgraceful. This strong message of anti-Semitism was preached since the formation of the NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers) in 1919. If it was the case that the German public did have the same Race and Ideology belief’s as Hitler then surely the party would of got far more votes than the 2.6% they got in the 1928 election. So in nine years they had only gained a small amount of voters. Five years later Hitler was being offered position of chancellor. So something must of happened to make them more popular. The party didn’t change there plan’s if they got into power, so what happened to the country to change the German’s Views? To fully understand this we need to go back to when the Weimar government were put into power.

The Weimar government were put into power in 1918, right after the end of World War One, this does not help any new government but the Weimar had further difficulties and it could be said they were doomed from the start. A year after the Weimar were put into power the NSDAP were formed. The Weimar signed the Treaty of Versailles that had terrible consequences for Germany, for a start they were ordered to pay reparations of an incredible fee and if Germany continued to pay these reparations they would of only just finished paying last year!
