Tsar Nicholas II

Nicholas II was born on May 18th, 1868 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
He was the second son of Emperor Alexander III.

Married to Alexandra of Hesse (a granddaughter of Queen Victoria)
In 1894, Nicholas' father, Alexander III, died of kidney failure, leaving the throne to Nicholas at the age of 26.
He was interested in the Far East. This got him into a disaster for war with Japan in 1905.
He was not very effective as a ruler, unable to concentrate on the business of being a Tsar.
He was a kind, loving family man but did not really understand the changes Russia was going through.
By 1917 he had lost control of Russia and abdicated.
On July 17th, 1918, aged 50, he and his family were shot by Bolsheviks during the Russian civil war.

She was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
At first, Nicholas' father, Tsar Alexander III, told them they could not get married but he soon changed his mind. Although, she had to convert to the Russian Orthodox faith before engaging to him.
She and Nicholas became engaged in April 1894.
The couple were married on the 14th November 1894.
In November of 1878, she caught diphtheria and nearly died.
Aged 46, she died on the 17th July, 1918. ...
