Tsar Nicholas II
- Nicholas II was born on May 18th, 1868 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
- He was the second son of Emperor Alexander III.
- Crowned as Tsar In 1896
- Married to Alexandra of Hesse (a granddaughter of Queen Victoria)
- In 1894, Nicholas' father, Alexander III, died of kidney failure, leaving the throne to Nicholas at the age of 26.
- He was interested in the Far East. This got him into a disaster for war with Japan in 1905.
- He was not very effective as a ruler, unable to concentrate on the business of being a Tsar.
- He was a kind, loving family man but did not really understand the changes Russia was going through.
- By 1917 he had lost control of Russia and abdicated.
- On July 17th, 1918, aged 50, he and his family were shot by Bolsheviks during the Russian civil war.
