What happened to the Romonov

family?

A.               Source A is written by Sergeyev, a white reporter. He explains how he does not think all the family was killed in the lower story of the building and how not all members of the family were killed. Source B was from Sir Charles Eliot’s report. His opinion is not a very clear one, he says the Tsar, the maid, Dr Botkins and two servants were shot, but reports no evidence was left behind. This backs-up Sergeyev’s evidence because it also tells people about the bullets in the wall but goes on to say there is no real evidence about how many people died in the room. Source A doesn’t mention what happened to the rest of the family whereas Source B tells us no corpses were found. Also source B comments on a train believed to be carrying the surviving members of the Romonov family. The sources give similar accounts but are both written by whites, this may make it more one sided. The sources aren’t very reliable because of the questionable circumstances, e.g. source B says no evidence was left behind and the author or source A, Judge Sergeyev was sacked a month after writing the article which was never published. Although the sources are similar this does not make them reliable.

  1. Source C is from a book by Judge Sokolov. It says that the entire Romanov family were  murdered using revolvers and bayonets. Then were burned after. This source is useful because it gives another point of view although parts of it were never made public. Source C differs from Sources A and B because it says the whole family had been murdered between 17-22 July whereas Source B says living members were on a train on the 17th.  All the sources agree with the fact that the at least some of the murders happened on the lower storey of the building and were shot, although Source C differs slightly saying the victims had been killed with bayonets as well. Judge Sokolov believes the corpses were chopped into pieces and burned with the aid of petrol and sulphuric acid after the murder, source A does not mention what happened to the bodies and Source B says the corpses were not found. Sources C was written 6 years after Source B. This makes it seem more reliable as a lot more research may have gone into the murders after. If Source B would have had more research it would have probably found out the same as Source C.  The sources are similar in some ways as they all agree in parts on how and where the family was killed. Source C also disagrees with Source A and B in some places. The sources disagree on the dates and how many people were killed.

C.                            Source D is not necessarily reliable just because it is an eyewitness account. Source D explains the position of the Romonov family in the room. Then Pavel Medvedev says he was told to go outside and check no one herd the shots and when he came back all of the Romonov family were dead. Source E is Medvedevs wife talking to investigators after her husbands’ death. She said that her husband fired shots at the family and he also told a guard he has put a few bullets in the Tsar. This showed everyone he was guilty and ...
