Hitler also realised that democracy was failing and locked into this by creating a preference of order over freedom policy, he made it clear that Germany needed a leader, a dictator. One of Hitler’s other objectives was to overturn the Versailles Treaty. He made this no secret, and the German people were attracted to this aim. With this Hitler managed to say that Marxists and Jews were a threat, that they were the criminals who signed the Treaty. People were convinced and manipulated to believe this, and so gave one of Hitler’s aims more support, which was getting rid of Jews, Marxists and Communists. Hitler made his policies appealing to people especially through his speeches, which were charismatic, and inspiring. He could easily exploit emotions with his speeches; this helped the party gain support.
The Nazi’s success partly stemmed from their organisational structure and methods. The party developed according to local circumstances. Much effort was also put into training speakers, which leads onto the use of propaganda. Hitler was a brilliant public speaker, he could easily manipulate the crowd. The Nazi’s gained many members through his speeches, which appealed to most Germans. Marches, rallies, uniforms and banners were just some of the types of propaganda used to get the message of the Nazism to Germany.
Weaknesses in the Weimar Government provided to be a big factor in the rise of the Nazi as well. As I have said, the Nazi’s did well when Germany was in a slump, or instable. This is true with the Weimar Government situation. Hitler emphasised that democracy was failing and that people had a lack of commitment to it. He expressed a more authoritarian view and made it clear that Germany needed one leader. He managed to exploit politicians and parties i.e. the weak liberal parties. Politicians like Von Papen and Hindenburg allowed Hitler to become powerful, thinking that he could be easily manipulated. The Nazi’s made it clear that Germany needed one party, not a democracy where no decisions were made.
Economic collapse also had a positive impact on the fortunes of the Nazi party. There was an agricultural slump that hit Germany, but also the Wall Street Crash in 1929 proved to be a big help to Hitler. Germany was economically the worst hit country in the world, it lead to five major banks in Germany crashing. Many lost jobs and poverty struck Germany. With such bad conditions the German looked to someone that could save them. They looked to extremist parties like the Nazi’s, so their vote increased hugely. More Germans were ready to hear Hitler. People wanted to get rid of democracy and Hitler proved that he would be a great leader for the nation.
The support and miscalculation of German leaders meant that Hitler became powerful. Bruning called elections in 1930 where Nazi’s made major gains. Von Papen and Hindenburg have already been mentioned, and were also influential in the rise of Hitler. Hitler was also able to take over after the dismissal of Schleicher, who had tried to gain support of the Nazi’s.
Circumstances and the exploitation of certain things meant that the rise of the Nazi’s was fast, Hitler was able to gain control easily through manipulating the German people, politicians, etc and exploiting conditions in Germany and political instability.
