Why did Stalin, not Trotsky, emerge as Lenin’s successor? [10] Two important key contenders were part of the struggle for power after the death of Lenin in 1923. In the end, Stalin emerged as Lenin’s successor and not Trotsky due to several reasons. Firstly, we must understand Stalin’s character and motives that had led him to become leader of the Communist Party. He was described to have a dull job, being appointed the Party’s first General Secretary. However, other Bolsheviks did not acknowledge that Stalin was building up his support behind the scenes over the years.
